I agree completely. Why pay the SAME exact price (and in some cases more) for a UMD movie when you can just buy the DVD and rip it to any device you choose including your PPC/PDA and the PSP???
Sony screwed up. They should have offered the UMD's for FREE with those DVDs or just charged $9.99 or less for the UMD versions. Sony is getting greedy and cocky again and it's going to come back to haunt them.
Few people will buy the UMD versions of movies when for the normal price- or more in some cases- of the identical DVD. I just checked and "House of Flying Daggers" has a price tag of
$29!! Yes, you read right:
$29!! Double what you;ll be able to buy the DVD for, I'm sure. Now if that itsn't a kick in the pants and a cold bucket of water thrown on the consumer that wants to check out movies on UMD format.
Sony might take a bit of a hit in the wallet initially, but then again, they OWN the UMD format. They OWN the movies that they are releasing on DVD (Sony Pictures) so I don't see them loosing much at all initially anyway by offering the UMD movies as free pack-ins or very low priced stand-alones...
Anyway, in the long run it will help drives sales of the PSP and further cement UMD as a viable movie format which will more than make up for the initial loss with tons of profit for Sony.
Wake up Sony!! Are you listening?? Offer it as a FREE pack-in with the normal DVD or charge very little for it stand-alone.
