The CPM model refers to advertising bought on the basis of impression. This is in contrast to the various types of pay-for-performance advertising, whereby payment is only triggered by a mutually agreed upon activity (i.e. click-through, registration, sale).
The total price paid in a CPM deal is calculated by multiplying the CPM rate by the number of CPM units. For example, one million impressions at $10 CPM equals a $10,000 total price.
1,000,000 / 1,000 = 1,000 units
1,000 units X $10 CPM = $10,000 total price
The amount paid per impression is calculated by dividing the CPM by 1000. For example, a $10 CPM equals $.01 per impression.
$10 CPM / 1000 impressions = $.01 per impression
CPM = Cost Per Thousand with the M standing for the Roman Numeral for 1000

I say go for it. It sounds like the advertising used at http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com, which really doesn't bother me much. I'm sure hosting fees for a site with this much traffic can run very high. I have no opposition to it.
I remember seeing something like this over on Geek. It didn't bother me too much although I'm not a huge fan of it either. I guess if it will benefit this site in the long run then go for it.
Yes, its exactly what PocketPC thoughts uses, in fact Jason is the one that suggested it to me.

I say, do it. Sounds like a good way to help the site. And you can do it like last time, a trial. If people hate it, you can remove them again, but I wouldn't mind them enough to cut you a support line, Chris!

I can see why this is a tough decision. Being able to support the site is important but in my opinion these things do make the site look a little "cheap". It would seem odd that in my opinion regular banner ads don't make the site look cheap but that's probably because almost every site uses banner ads. As far as turning them off, I find it odd that they even give you an option for that. The method must be difficult enough so that most casual visitors wouldn't even bother.
BUT, if i don't have to see them then it's not a problem.'
If it ever came down to a choice of ads or no aximsite, then i supose i'd learn to live with them. I know Chris doesn't do these things lightly, so i'd trust him to make the right call.
