Serious poll - PLEASE READ BEFORE VOTING

The reason this is serious to me is that I have been battling my judgements for a long time on this matter.

Before I ask the question, let me point a couple things out:
1. They can be turned off by members that do not want to see them....
2. This would be a great revenue source for the site. I have never considered any kind of "subscriber service" or the likes and never will, but I am trying to think of ways to generate revenue.

The Question is this:
Should I impement intellitext ads.

What is intellitext?
It is a third-party technology created and distributed through Vibrant Media Incorporated, developed to locate keywords & phrases found within text and link them to relevant commercial information. IntelliTXT is identified with a double-underline and all corresponding text ads are clearly marked with “Advertisement” or “Sponsored Link”.

This company is offering me a way to allow members to use cookies to turn off these words as well.

I have been debating this for a while and I value the input of the community. I really would like to do this to increase revenue, but I am concerned with the impresion of the site to others if employed.

Thanks for your input.

Chris,
If it can be turned off by those who don't like it AND make you some money to help support the site I say go for it.

The answers seem backwards from your question.

Q: Would you have a problem ...?

A: No, and I would never visit again if you do.

Doesn't quite jive.

Chris.I believe anything to help this site financially will be a good thing. If you were a ceo that made several hundred thousand dollars a year I might not have those feelings.I know you work hard with the rest of the people that keep this site up and making big bucks is not your main motivation. For those who dissagree with the adds let them earn that contribitor's banner first and then complain.

Chris, if it's that easy to turn off and assuming that most people would, then how would it be such a good revenue-generating solution?

Most likely the fee would not be based on traffic to the add sites... Just my guess

If I can control the adds links as you indicate I see no problems with it.

Sorry if my limited knowledge blinds anybody here, but if the adds are as non-obtrusive as let's say the ones listed on a Google page, I say the adverse effects on Aximsite's display would be minimal and it would give you a return on your hard work...

Go for it!

If its good for you and the site I can live with it.

One thing to consider though, is the implementation of the ads. I've seen these ads work so that when the mouse is over the highlighted text it takes a second or two to pop up, making it a fairly deliberate action to view the ad. Move the mouse away and the ad is gone instantly - I have zero problems with these.

On the other hand, last night I was on a site where the ads popped up immediately and were on a timed delay to close. Simply moving your mouse across one of these would bring up the the ad and then you have to wait for the ad to time-out before you could finish reading your post or article(just to bump the mouse and have another pop up). - Not a deal breaker, but very frustrating.

I believe I have seen this elsewhere. The only part about it I don't like, is the underlined text in the forum messages I am reading. They are very distracting, especially with the popups when your mouse hits one of them.

Rather than turn it off, how about just not underlining text, and have the ads appear above or to the side of the forum based on the text most prevelent in the messages.

They should be off for axim's accessing the pages. It takes long enough to download. With the desk top I would be okay as long as they are not the ones that float across the middle of the screen.

Gigi has a good point. If everyone turns them off, what value do they have?

Knowing how hard Chris works, I think it is OWED to him for this to be given a chance. So, my opinion is let's try it.
