I don't have an X50, but it still shows up in my "new posts". You haven't heard me complain about that. Politics should be no different.
Because this in Aximsite and it is expected by guess to see thread about Axims and Pocket PC not political threads. One of the problem as stated above is that we do not have the time and resources to monitor every threads and posts. If a political thread generate flaming to some individuals and a guess reads it they may not feel welcome here and may go somewhere else. The same goes about ads and their Sponsors. Talking about Axims make sense here but not necessarily politics. This said it is nice to see all the different opinions and discussions here but we have to remain within our boundaries as Aximsite is open to the world.

one of the things i like about aximsite is the input from the developers... It gives me a unique way to hear what they're doing and offer ideas. SKtools, Microsoft, Astraware, Mobipocket, SPB, SBSH, Ilium and loads of others have all all been here in recent weeks.
If Aximsite turns into a political debating ground then they are less likely to come.
If we can do politics well then why not.. but the truth is that we haven't been doing it well at all. And rather than enhancing the reputation that we have here it tarnishes it.
Again, if someone wants to name a place to take it outside on another forum, IRC or whatever then fine, just let me know where and when.
But lets keep aximsite as one of the friendliest forums on the net
(PLEASE)

Maybe I missed something here, but why not just leave everything as it was,
with the addition of the Posting rules about flaming!!
Aximsite is a great place for all, and has increased in size daily, so I see no reason to
"Fix something that is not Broken"!!!

Is it really such a large problem that we have to impose rules upon political discussions?
For some people, yes it is too much of a problem. Things get too heated because people get out of hand, or sometimes people just get offended at the mere sight of a "controversial" thread.
It's impossible to please all the people all the time so we have to try to please most of the people most of the time.

I am thinking on same lines as PsionAndy... I come here because it is Aximsite... I love the fact that there are many geeks here with similar interests in computers to mine... But I will not lose any sleep if there are some taboo topics... I will find the appropriate place to put those messages if I really need to (including my own site with a link in my signature if I really felt it so important ;) ) I also love the fact that they are all so very different in their views... I would not enjoy this site nearly as much if there was not the diversity of topics out there. I also rely to some extent on this diversity to keep me well informed... If I only read the newspapers I would never really know anything...
I have no problem with the new rules. I dont much care for the 48 hour thing but I see where martin is coming from.. this is about two things as far as I can see - flaming content and resource limitations... I am okay with the change in the rules if it helps our hard working admins keep up with the load.
I will wait and see where it goes but have confidence in the site staff to work it out and hear all the concerns voiced. :approve:
I have to agree with psionandy and overclockme. I understand 100% the reason the new rules were necessary and where Martin was coming from. I think the new rules are very well-intentioned, and I think we should all be appreciateive to Martin for trying to maintain Aximsite as such a great forum. That being said, I do think the 48 hour rule could use some tweaking, but we've been over and over that.
One of the things I love about Aximsite is that you can ask a question, no matter how stupid and typically, you'lll get an answer. It is a great resource for my Axim, and I have definately benefitted from it. Other forums I have visited will also answer your questions, but they also will feel the need to insult you in the process. I have never had that experience at Aximiste. Also, like Psionandy, I love the fact that the developers are here on Aximsite. Where better to have your questions answered, troubleshoot, or get the latest, than right from the horse's mouth. That is a fantastic feature of Aximsite.
I'm not going to say that I don't enjoy the political threads. I do. They are very interesting and can be a lot of fun. However, they do get unnecessarily aggressive at times. Also, they are not the primary reason most of us are here. If Martin or Chris were to say tomorrow that they had created a new message board where Axim users could discuss any political topics, that would be fine with me.
On a final note, I think it is somewhat sad to see that people are boycotting Aximsite based upon the new rule changes. This is a site about Axims, not politics. There are lots of those out there. It is only be the grace of the admins. that we are able to post unrelated threads at all. Boycotting Aximsite because you can't post as many threads as you want about non-Axim topis just makes no sense at all.
I refuse to contribute to anywhere where I can't freely speak my mind.
:throwcomp
And it didn't even take tear gas
You know, I've been thinking of all the protest things to register my displeasure on this... silent boycott, posting a bunch of stupid "fluffy puppy" stories (did you know that there was a UK story on the worlds smallest kitten today and a sunbathing piglet yesterday?? loads of fun for all to discuss), even something like the vocal boycott that Reese and Stevenator are doing.
Aximsite was fun... err, Waterfountain was fun. Aximsite was useful 2-3 years ago when I got my x50v. Now I have no need for tech support here, I've posted my contribution on support issues back then. I only visit Aximsite for the Waterfountain.
Back in the day there was a thread on the origin of the waterfountain and why Chris brought it back (or incorporated it into AximSite forums). It was entertaining and informative. It made me think. I had to research... You just can't spout some BS and not have someone that knew better bury you on facts and an educated opinion.
The boycott routine is pointless and effectless... This is a commercial site where the primary goal is to get revenue from advertisment. It isn't a hobby site any longer, so any non-participation by a (small) segment of the users here doesn't matter in the least. The site promotes itself by having X number of thousands of viewers daily or whatever...
PO'ing 10 or 20 by preserving a vanilla, milktoast environment is perfectly acceptable. Trying to force a revolution by stupid boycott is pointless. Pissing off the mods that are trying to get along is pointless, because even if you get them to change the policy, you'd have made them into adversaries.
It's been fun. but apparently it will not be fun any longer.
I'll hope for better

I think some of us are taking this slightly too far.
It is not our intention to ban political/religious/other debate from Aximsite (even though Chris has already indicated that he'd rather you didn't discuss these things on his site if you can possibly avoid it.)
Our intention is two-fold:
1) Completely eliminating all flaming, trolling, and other aggressive and abusive behaviour. In recent history, much of that behaviour has arisen from political debates in the Water Fountain.
2) To restrict the deluge of political/religious/other threads that currently swamp the "new posts" on Aximsite. This site is about PDAs, and that is its commercial focus. We do not want to drive away the thousands of new users, the thousands of core users, the hundreds of developers, vendors and manufacturers, and dilute the reputation Aximsite has for its class and quality, by allowing an unrestricted torrent of fairly controversial threads on topics that most visitors aren't interested in seeing, and are offended or put-off by when they do see them.
But we also don't want to upset those members (who, we feel, are very important to the site) who like to discuss such issues. So, we're striving to find a solution. If we can do it, we'll create a forum (much like the "contributor's lounge" at the moment) that is hidden from normal view, and that you can subscribe to voluntarily. You can then debate as much as you wish (within Aximsite's normal rules, of course.) The vast majority of visitors to the site, meanwhile, can get on with the business of finding out why their bluetooth stack is buggered.
This is the ideal scenario. In the meantime, we'll struggle on with the 48-hour rule. All being well and good, it's a temporary measure, so don't worry.

I think I have a better understanding of this now. Just a suggestion though, if the goal is that new people to the site will see PDA related info on the new posts, then why not keep the waterfountain as is but make that hidden? Just seems easier to me.
Hey, Martin, I think rsaturn stole my post while I was hypnotized by your avatar as well. It does have sort of a soothing, Matt Groening quality to it. :)
Thanks for the update, Martin. For what it's worth. I totally agree with your thoughts in your previous post. I think it is important not to lose focus of why we all came here in the first place. No one googled I hate Republicans/Democrats and came up with Aximsite. :) I am all for a separate, private forum where those who wish can hold political type discussions. I will anxiously await and update on that. In the meantime, I plan to enjoy Aximsite as I always have.
In my humble opinion:
I thought the name of this forum is AximSite and not PoliticalSite. There are some users who only seem to post political threads and those people should be posting those threads on a forum design for politics. When I logon to AximSite, I get tired of wading through the political threads just to get to the threads about Axims. That is wrong.

I also agree that Aximsite is not the place for political and religious discussions. I have participated in other sites and eventually you get a few posters that seem to drive other regular members away. Both of these topics are typically very heated because there are seldom any 'fence-sitters'. There are plenty of P&R sites to visit if that content isn't here.

Note the three typical management actions when faced with opposition:
1)"Vote with your feet" as one past manager put it, other wise called "If you don't like it leave". This is usually accompanied with an stern explanation of reasons with the punch line given above. This action provides the best comedy, and is my favorite. "The beatings will continue until moral improves!" tee hee... I had one manager scold me once, "STOP IT, STOP IT, STOP THAT LAUGHING!".
2) The compromise that no one likes either. A good example is those little glass buildings outside that look like bus stops that have been put in for smokers. Notice how they have been reduced in number and move from the front door, to the side door, back door, loading dock.....
3) The policy remains but the zeal for enforcement wanes. Think of casual Fridays, the no Blue Jeans rules and other fashion police directives.
Anyway, Managers and new corporate directions come and go. Its best to not get upset by them. Just learn to enjoy. Like copy the following statement and post it in each thread: "You would not have this problem if Al Gore was President."
