I am one who enjoys reading postings related to the axim and computers. I usually skip over all the water fountain posts because I usually only have so much time to spare and so I look for topics of interest. I have gained a lot of knowledge from aximsite concerning my x50v and computers in general that I would have spent hundreds of hours looking in vain for answers. I would hope that radimus and others that have resolved their problems with the axim would be coming online to use their knowledge to assist us that have come in more recent times.
We must remember that this is site is established and maintained by others who have the right to direct what is and isn't posted. Just because we don't agree with a decision is not reason to boycott completely the site. I would hope reese and others would change their mind and rejoin the site because I am sure they have much to offer to all of us. Second, as pointed out earlier limitations to posting could backfire and be used to control the political postings. For example we could have a race every 48 hrs to see who posts first and therefore control the topic that can be discussed during the next 48 hrs. The political posting that is established may be one that the general population could care less about but for the next 48 hrs it would stand king of the political mountain. Depending on when the 48 hrs starts, certain parts of the world (or country) could dictate what is being said because they could be the ones awake and post first. Sorry for the long post but after reading 4 pages of comments I had to add my 2 cents worth.

Our intention is two-fold:

1) Completely eliminating all flaming, trolling, and other aggressive and abusive behaviour. In recent history, much of that behaviour has arisen from political debates in the Water Fountain.

2) To restrict the deluge of political/religious/other threads that currently swamp the "new posts" on Aximsite. This site is about PDAs, and that is its commercial focus. We do not want to drive away the thousands of new users, the thousands of core users, the hundreds of developers, vendors and manufacturers, and dilute the reputation Aximsite has for its class and quality, by allowing an unrestricted torrent of fairly controversial threads on topics that most visitors aren't interested in seeing, and are offended or put-off by when they do see them.

But we also don't want to upset those members (who, we feel, are very important to the site) who like to discuss such issues. So, we're striving to find a solution. If we can do it, we'll create a forum (much like the "contributor's lounge" at the moment) that is hidden from normal view, and that you can subscribe to voluntarily. You can then debate as much as you wish (within Aximsite's normal rules, of course.) The vast majority of visitors to the site, meanwhile, can get on with the business of finding out why their bluetooth stack is buggered.

This is the ideal scenario. In the meantime, we'll struggle on with the 48-hour rule. All being well and good, it's a temporary measure, so don't worry.
I feel for you. You're damned if you do and damned if you don't.

I've been on other forums and have NEVER found a community that we have here. The respect we have for each other 99% of the time is unique. I think that is what draws the 'regulars' and keeps them...but most importantly in regards to the controversial threads....is the intelligence factor. This forum attracts a group of people whose intelligence is very apparent...their keen insight (from whatever angle it comes) is always refreshing to me. I have always read the political threads with enthusiasm as it causes me to really weigh things in a way that the news/newsapers cannot. The integrity Chris has instilled here in Aximsite's infancy shows through even in the political threads, even if we have moments, we have never crossed 'the line' as other forums do....and as said b4, we leave this arena and still respond to one another in the 'what i like about the person above me' threads. We just have something special here, I'd hate to see that lost. For my part, i believe in the dedicated political thread idea that would need to be subscribed to. If there wasn't such an engaging, intelligent exchange of ideas there, I don't think anyone would be fighting for it as they are. Chris, please know that we appreciate everything you've done/allowed to have aximsite become the premier site that it is. ()

(sorry to ramble, lost line of thought as kids run through here...hope you get my drift)

I know this is a private site and I am no fan of the political forums... but any rules limiting open discussion makes me a little sad.

I agree with this rule, no argument. but this isn't soccer. i'm really offended by that.

please hurry up with a solution, this rule is killing us(the everyone who is continuing to enjoy aximsite).

by definition you do not value freedom of expression.

the freedom of speech(there is no freedom of expression that is protected under our constitution), only applies to the government and what it is allowed to do.

if your a private business owner(like chris is to aximsite.com(to my knowledge) you can do whatever you want. you can run your business as free market as possible or run things like communists(within americas laws).

JMJ, Dude...

It is OK. If they can make a forum for the political/religious stuff then all is well. The Call to Action stuff just sounds petty and childish.

The fact that there is even a WaterFountain here is more than most(any) commercial sites have... and this is a commercial site with advertisers and developers and international support. SHSB doesn't have one, I'm moderator on other forums and there are no political/religious threads there... I've tried to start a few, even in the private mod forums and there was no love there. That is why I appreciate the WF here.

How many products are tested and developed in the middle east, They may not like to advertise here if every third post bags on the current BS going on over there. There is even multicultural moderators here.

I don't want to sound wishy washy, because I do like debates of all types, and you do have to draw sides in a debate. but the "whining" from several of us (as well as the anti political thread crowd) just sounds childish... which doesn't help the position.

This is Chris' site... it is his game. If the issue was a couple overzealous mods bashing the deal then that is one thing. If however this is a change for the site and it is approved by the admins, then that is that.

Hopefully, the 'private' forum could be made and we can get participation there... otherwise, well... nothing is forever.

I was going to get a Cingular 8150 this fall anyway

Do what you want. Whether I stay or go, participate or lurk, will depend on how things fall out, and what enjoyment I get out of Aximsite in the future. Truth is, I own an X30h. It works fine but I haven't needed help with it in over a year, nor have I had much to offer other users in terms of support in quite some time. So I'm really only here for enjoyment of the Water Fountain threads.

I think this is extremely misguided. (And perhaps overstated?) In business you learn very early on that the only way to stop theft and shoplifting is to lock your doors and not let any one in. Short of that, store owners have to strike a blanace between security and customer service.

Likewise, the only way to completely eliminate all flaming, trolling, etc. is to stop participants from posting. You have to find a compromise that reduses flaming to an acceptable level (i.e. actively enforcing low tolerance standards), but leaves your guests feeling welcome and their participation enjoyable.

If your goal is "completely eliminating...", you're going frustrate yourselves and your guests trying to achieve an unrealistic goal.

Regarding rule Number One...

I think it might help to refine the thought process. Threads don't become agressive/abusive/etc. Users do. To close a thread is to take action against all participants because of the actions of one or two. I'm all for stern warnings, and even banning abusive posters, but closing a thread because one or two participants get's out of hand sounds a bit draconian.

Also, be prepared for a great deal of disagreement as to what constitutes flaming, trolling and agressive/abusive behavior. I understand that the moderators decision is final, but unless the moderator is willing to EXPLAIN AND DISCUSS AND POSSIBLY REVERSE his decision, his actions are only going to end up causing more upset, anger and frustration among users. You'll find this out the first time some one posts a heated comment that's interpreted by a moderator as a flame.
