Exclamation New Water Fountain Rules

In view of the large amount of political or topical debate that has recently occurred in the Water Fountain, we are laying down some further rules specifically for this forum so everyone can continue to enjoy Aximsite:

1) As soon as one of these threads becomes aggresive/abusive/etc, it will be closed and the offending members a stern warning (i.e. a "yellow card.) Repeat offenders will receive a 24hr ban, or a 7-day ban, depending upon the seriousness of the offence. All moderators have been asked to enforce this strictly. Please make sure you remain nothing but civil and respectful at all times.

2) Only one new political thread will be allowed every 48 hours. So, if one member starts one on Tuesday, and another starts one later on Tuesday, or on Wednesday, then the latter thread will be deleted. The latter member is, of course, free to post his thread on the Thursday.

Please bear in mind that, if you abide by these rules, you are free to discuss whatever you want. We value freedom of expression, but only where it does not have a negative impact on Aximsite.

EDIT: Please disregard these rules; a new Political and Religious forum has now been set up. See here for details.

Thanks for your cooperation.

Martin

Martin,

I think these rule changes are a great idea. I just have one question with regard to the second rule, the 48 hour waiting period. If a second thread is started within that waiting period, is there a way to hold it in queu (SP??) until the end of the waiting period, so that that thread will be sure to be the next one started. In other words, if another user posted a political thread on Monday morning, and I posted one on Tuesday, mine would automatically be opened on Wednesday morning, and if another user started a thread on Wed., then that thread would not be opened until 48 hours after mine??

thank you
maybe you should make a subcategory of the water fountain forum specifically for ranting and raving about matters totally unrelated to axim

Thanks Martin, and the rest of the admin team. :approve:

I thought the whole of the water fountain was for matters totally unrelated to the axim

mofologic,

Isn't that already the point of the water fountain??

Although, I do have to say, I have been noticing that the water fountain threads are far outnumbering the actual Axim related threads. There are some days (I usually only check Aximsite by looking at new updates) where almost all of the new updates rae water fountain related.

I am unpleasantly surprised at this announcement. The water fountain is for discussion of things unrelated to the axim, and that could be anything. There is alot of wonderful political debate that occurs here and to limit it would serve to worsen the appeal of the site for many of us.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy posting nice things about "the person above me" and all that, but as I've gotten to know my fellow Aximsiters from around the world, I've also come to appreciate their points of view. Though we may differ at times in how we look at things, and sometimes we may get a bit upset with each other, at the end of the day, I still like "the person above me".

This censorship is a mistake. Look at the number of posts on the political threads and you can see how popular they are. Many of the political threads have well over 100 posts and usually attain that number within a few days. That is b/c Aximsiters are intelligent and love to debate current issues. If members feel uncomfortable with any of the issues being discussed, all they have to do is move on to the next thread. I certainly do.

This site is known for its heavy duty content. It is the place to go when you need help with your Axim. It then becomes the place to stay when you meet all the people that are members. Shortly you can't get enough and you need more. People want more out of this site than "the person above me" and "musical conversation" and "should know". Building posts counts is certainly fun, but we all are intelligent and concerned about world politics. We are all eager to learn and discuss issues that affect us. We are all friendly. We all want to have friendly debates about issues in the world here at our favorite place.

I would expect the number of axim posts to decrease since there have ben no new releases. A12 was small and has already panned out. 50 vrs 51 has gotten old, bluetooth is known. Now we're pretty much down to new owners with known problems. Like others, I came to find answers, stuck around to help out, and got sucked into the watter cooler. Now it seems that the axim issues I can help on have been reduced and I look forward to the watter cooler more and more. I have not sunk to starting threads yet. I keep thinking its time to move on but ........

no you don't. if you value the freedom of expression then you have to take the bad with the good regardless of wether you like it or not.

its like saying you can eat whatever you want, but only stuff that does not have fat.

however this is a privately held forum.

Benots4, I was amused by your post, mainly because it almost exactly described my experience with Aximsite. I came with some questions, got hooked, found I could help some people, and then noticed this odd water fountain thing. Avoided it for a while, got sucked in and spend most of my time there. :) I suspect that is true of a lot of folks here. :)

As for the main purpose of this thread, it clearly results from the tone of some of the debates lately, which have gotten much more personal and viscious (SP). It is always fun to debate, but it can be a real deterrent when the first time someone disagrees with you, they feel the need to attack you personally. Recently, I was on another forum, which many people here frequent. When I asked a noob question, I was personally insulted for asking that question. Not quite the same thing, but the lack of civility means I won't visit that forum anymore. My point was that we don't want that to happen here.

Aside from the "participation" threads like TPAY, that idiotic counting thread, This or That, etc, these boards are probably growing fastest along the lines of political threads. The reason that I see for the political threads being singled out is a slightly growning (not necessarily out of control yet) ill temper of the posts found there. Outside of the political threads, people are almost universally well-behaved (although, I can name three or four who need to be more polite to newbies). Too bad we can't just filter WF threads out of our daily posts check. Perhaps politics needs its own WF sub-forum? It might grow to require its own server! I wonder if there will be room when Chris finally merges Mobilitysite into Aximsite. You have noticed that Aximsite is kind of what Mobilitysite should be? I wish I could keep my AS post count there!

The first part of the rules about aggresive and abusive behavior has been here all the time but sometimes not enforced in some cases. The 48 hr rule is like a bottleneck.Everyone will be watching the clock trying to get their post in on the 48th hour.Mods will be there deleating away.If a person take the time to express his or her opinion and find it only gets deleated because someone else beat him to the time slot, ill feelings could occur.I personaly don't start political threads and very seldome read them but many enjoy them and I think the 48 hr rule will hurt rather than help.Thread closing alone should let people know when they have stepped over the line and individual warnings should keep things civil.

Well limiting new posts will just cause old ones to be dug up, look at the god exists thread. Maybe better to impose a limit then close. 100 posts, or maybe 3 days and all threads are closed. Add a current events thread where all threads close in X days. Most of these threads really do go on to long. Like I am with this post.

We'll play it by ear and see. Luckily it's not like to we have to go to the courts to get the rules changed if they need some fine tuning.

So your feedback is valued as we go along.

On a personal note I do think it's a little disapointing that it comes to this. Many people on here ARE capable of rational discussion on sometimes sensitive subjects.

But then there are those that:
* Feel that we should not be discussing these things here because they feel offended or;
* Cannot participate in these discussions without crossing that line from discussion to flaming etc.

And I do agree that we can't let things resort to playground name-calling. Which at times has happened.

But let's try it out and see how it works. Feel free to voice you opinions in the Site Troubles/Suggestions forum. :)
