keyword "but". you can't call something this if it's that.

freedom of speech protects inappropriate talk.
And why is it so great to have inappropriate talk? What is its purpose in the first place? Create disturbance, more inappropriate comments, flamings etc... Tell me what is great about this. That will kill your traffic in a hurry.

I see this argument come up on several forums I frequent. My opinion has been always the same...

You can have your free speech. Come into my home and if I dont like what you have to say I will exercise my right throw you out on your constitutional a**.

I dont mean any offense, its just my half serious take on the matter

One thing that would help with "where is my threads" , is for the mods to PM the users that their thread has been removed, and maybe why, if they have the time to do so.

Yea its a bit more work but most users like the courtesy.

Its the mods and admin that set the tone here.

I guess someone wasn't reading the agreement when they signed up for the site. It is private and can be modded in the manner seen fit by the admin. Just gotta play it cool.

And freedom of speech only protects you from the government (please read the bill of rights before you bring this up) , not from a private organization.

About time someone brought that up! Most of the people who cry about free speech (especially in forums like this) have never even read it.

It is a fair request and we will try to do so. I have been guilty of it and will obliged.

and that's for the owner of a site to decide,

but a site doesn't respect freedom of expression if it is to stop flamming or inappropriate comments that might offend some(resulting in lost traffic).

it's like this stadium searching thing(some football(american) stadium searching everyone that got overturned due to the constitution, unreasonable search n seizior(sp?, no excuse there), and people are saying that the publics safety over-rides the constitution.

and this site: traffic over-rides the freedom of expression, but this site values the freedom of expression. it's contradictory to each other. you can't have both and in this case, aximsite.com didn't value the freedom of expression.

so what was the deleted thread about?

BTW:
Quote:
Pirates are thieves.
software, movies and music all cost more to the people who pay for it, because the industry tries to recoup its losses by raising prices. So we, that is you and me, the law abiding people pay the price for the activities of software pirates.
this is the most wrong thing about piracy. prices are high becouse companys want to make the most money. not becouse of pirates. in mopst cases it actulyl rases compasnys revinus becouse the pirate uses the software and decides he likes it then he goes out and buys the next version. this has been proven. and the music indstre deservs to lose money....

Two observations:

If you were to walk into a toy store full of kids, light up a joint, and start screaming profanities you'd be tossed out in seconds.

'Rights' is only half of the equation. The other side is 'Responsibility'.

What's all this about freedom of speech?! You blokes don't have freedom of speech if it's on someone else's dime. Freedom has a price - it's not free folks.

You are allowed freedom of speech, but you certainly can't be using other people's space to exercise that freedom. It's freedom of speech, but it's not unrestricted freedom. If you want to exercise your right to say whatever you want, pay for your own site and you can spew whatever you feel like it.

As for the fact that this site is making money - what's that got to do with anything? It's true that this site depends on the members, but that does not allow the members to behave in whatever fashion they choose. You think a store owner will allow a stinkin' foul-mouthed kid in their store because he might be a paying customer? No! That stinkin' foul-mouthed kid will probably drive other business away.

To respond to some of the things said above:

1) The site is not about "making money"; Chris does this in his spare-time, and he has a full-time job. The costs of running this site are fairly huge, and he needs a certain amount of revenue every month to even have a chance of breaking even.

2) Free speech. What I said in the "new rules" thread was, "We value freedom of expression, but only where it does not have a negative impact on Aximsite." This seems fairly clear. We'll let you talk about what you want, but only if we feel it's not of detriment to Aximsite as a whole. We deemed that the plethora of political and religious threads were a problem, so we decided to do something about it. For a private forum, we are very liberal in what people can say (most tech sites don't even have a water fountain). It's not contradictory; one can value the liberty of a single individual, but it can be overriden in the public interest where it is deemed that individual is a detriment to society.

It is, however, wrong to talk about "free speech." In the legal, consitutional sense, it simply doesn't apply here. Solara's post, above, has a fairly good analogy.

Hopefully this is the end of the matter, and people can happily go and discuss things in the new forum.

Chris and Martin own the forum, so they write the rules.

This is purely my personal opinion, but I feel that Aximsite would be better if the Water Fountain was abolished and the site used purely to cover items about Axims (and othe PDAs for comparison purposes). technical problems, operating systems, PDA software and the like.

There must be a mass of other forums for discussing politics, religion, sex or other non-Axim related matters. Why not use them? It would solve this "Inappropriate" problem completely and save Mods time.
