The "no comments allowed" for Announcement threads

This may have been asked before but I wasn't sure how to search for it. Why aren't comments allowed on Mobilitysite Announcements? I realize that one can start a thread about an announcement but why not just comment using the announcement itself?

You can leave a comment at the announcement itself. Just follow the link to the announcement and you'll find a place where you can comment.

I have to say that the announcement threads or blog, whatever you want to call it, is running pretty smoothly now. Except that every now and then and its happening more often now, the link to the mobilitysite blog wont work.
