IE8 Beta

Hi All

Is anyone else trying out the new IE8 Beta?

I seem to be having problems with Mobilitysite even in compatibility mode and I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this. I can (usually) get to the Forum Home Page but the New Posts won't load (or only partially load) and I struggle to get to individual threads.

The good news is that IE7 is still working like a trooper :approve:

Hey Jogga,

I was an IE diehard until Firefox hit version 3.0. Good grief but they sure did a nice job with it this time. I still keep IE7 around for the few pages I go to that require it but, man, is FF3.0 nice. Give it a shot; you won't be disappointed.

I'm a Microsoft developer of many years but this time Mozilla really impressed me (which is very hard to do).

I was a diehard IE fan also, until one night IE7 automatically installed.

It is one of the worst looking things ive ever seen. They moved the stop and refresh buttons, and there is no option to move them back. Also, i was fed up with the insecurity of IE.

So, i looked for something that was skinnable and fast, which most open source is. And that is why i now use firefox and will never go back to IE.

Hopefully FX 3.0 isnt slow. Im staying with 2.0.0.16 b/c my addons and stuff havent been upgraded yet.

FF 3.0.1 has been blisteringly fast for me so far.

No crashes, no stalling.

LOL, thanks for the replies. I upgraded to FF3 and couldn't get the site to load!

I've cleared the cache, cookies and history and it's up and running now! However, the rendering to awful!! Firefox might be quick, but it looks terrible.

@jogga, must be your computer. The site in FF3 on my machine is the best of all the main browsers (IE, Opera, Flock, etc). I believe, though I am too lazy to find the study right now, that FF has the best rendering engine, which is why web developers tend to use it.

Thanks Martin

I've tried playing with the fonts but I can't get it looking as I want it (i.e. like Internet Explorer :)). It's acceptable and at least I can access the site using FireFox.

Perhaps Cleartype is enabled in IE, but not in FF? Or some other Windows setting that isn't playing nicely with FF3.

What pages still require IE?!? My experience with IE7 is that now some sites REQUIRE Firefox, as they do not display well in IE7 but display fine in Firefox.

Please list the sites that you need IE for, as I would like to check them. Thanks.

Martin, you are a genius (not that this fact was ever in doubt)! :approve:

I downloaded the Clear Type applet, ran the wizard, selected the view that I wanted and reset Firefox to allow sites to select their own fonts. The result is as good as anything in IE (including IE8) and the page load times are significantly better.

OK, I'm sold: I'm moving to Firefox. :)

No problem, although I assure you it was a lucky guess on my part, rather than a shining example of higher thinking!

Diagnosis aside, however, the outcome is a good one; FF3 is a fantastic browser, and there are innumerable add-ons so that you can view the web the way you want to. It's more or less the first thing I install when I buy a new laptop.

Mmmm....

There is a potential problem, I've spent all afternoon downloading various themes to try out and haven't got a single thing done!

Having said that, the RSS feed is so much better than IE :approve:

Thanks Dotan, as usual your posts are to the point and useful.
I'll have a look at that later but I must admit it's not a high priority, just one of those pages that I was killing time with and noticed it didn't work after the update.
