well yeah i press the new post button (actully my hom page is a searth for new post) but i would like a shuffle button... also it would be helpful to the N00Bs because if they post a thread and no one answers it and it just goes to a really far page in the forum, then if someone who knows the answer that just dosent know about the thread hits the shuffle button then problem solved for the N00B..

Scarily I was thinking about the same thing earlier today. However decided it was probably a bad idea

It won't help the noobs because the chances are at least 84670 to 1 against someone getting their post. By the time a thread comes up again the person who asked the question might have left aximsite for a long time..

It would also make things more confusing dead threads came right up to the surface again in a random fashion. The search funtion makes them available to people who are interested but in a more controlled fashion.

I actually said Probably

I was trying to show that while the idea did have some merit, that the reasons why it was a bad idea outweighed the benifits that it would give.

At first the Shuffle feature seemd very attractive to me. Aximsite was here long before I arrived (even compared to you I'm a relative newbie :) ) There have been lots of interesting discussions, events and pieces of information that took place here that i know very little of. A shuffle feature would let me see some of those things. That's why i liked the idea.

BUT (you could tell there was a but couldn't you...)
the problem with such a feature is that I would start commenting on a lot of these threads.. And so would everyone else. And it would mess up the chronological narative of the site.

At the moment threads live... and threads die. Some threads stay dormant for a while and then are woken up again. For example. A few weeks ago I accidently woke up the thread congratulating frenchy on his 5,000th post. Seeing as he is (still) nearly at 10,000th post I thought people would be interested in seeing it. However it did cause confusion. Some people congratulated him on his 5000th post last week!!!

Imagine the confusion if Everyone did the same thing with all of the threads!

Speaking of being congratulated and causing confusion....I had the opportunity (maybe unique, I'm not sure) of being congratulated for reaching 1,000 posts on two separate occasions in the same week. Here's the thread. We won't talk about why it happened.

however.... most f the time when people post they look at the DATE of the thread... that tells something....

The thing is though that most people won't look at the date. There is a thread from Dsmith about an email problem that he was having that has just resurfaced. I nearly replied to that thinking it was a problem he was having now.

If you want random threads there is, however, a way of doing it that won't destroy the fabric of time, space and aximsite...
