iPOD memory v PDA
I was wondering if someone could explain how they are able to produce affordable 60gb ipods but not an affordable memory card greater than 6gbs. I thought these machines have mirco drives inside them. Is this just market economics at play, i.e. supply and demand, or is there something more technical going on?

Thanks

I think it also has to do with apples suppliers. Apple gets huge discounts from Samsung, Hitachi, whoever, Because Apple sells the ipod in such high volume.

They use hard disk drives in iPods, although a bit smaller than usual. Flash memory is very expensive, HDD storage is rather cheap. Micro drives use HDDs not flash and no they haven't reached 60gb yet, that's only bigger HDDs. Have you never noticed how physically these iPods with larger storage are than the Minis/nanos?

I've noticed the difference in size between the Nano and the larger capacitied ipods. My point of reference, however, was my axim. I've not found the larger ipods to be any more bulcky than the axim. I was just wondering if there was a way of combining these HDDs and PDAs and if there isn't why not?

hehe you know most of the size of iPod is the HDD and the battery, a PDA has much more "equipment" than iPod so hold an iPod up to your axim and see should see aproximite size

True, flash memory is very expensive, but it has gone done HUGE amounts in price. 1.5 years ago, 512mb sd card=$250, now 512mb sd card=$40.

If they did indeed combine the iPods 1.8 Hard drive into a PDA.... think of the functionality?

It'll be the size of approx 2 Palm Lifedrives
We'll need to call up varoious pants manufactures (sweatshops) and have them redesign the pocket
ORRR you could just get a new scottevest
I hear those things are great, but quite quite quite expensive. Anyone here have one? If you have no clue what this is, it's scottevest.com
Check it out, these things were mentioned on davesipaq and thisweekintech

I have the huge 3300 mugen battery and it's door already significantly impacts the dimensions of my axim. If they were to attach an hdd to the rest of the back portion of my axim, from the battery door upward, it wouldn't dramatically change where or how I store it or even how I hold it.

It sounds like nothing technically prevents this combination except the desire to keep the Axim or any other ppc slender.

Thanks

I do believe the big hard drives will significantly drain the battery life of a PDA. Unless you want to add the 3300 mugen battery as the "standard" battery to your axim with the iPod hard drive.... I would stick with the current microdrives and wait for those to go up.

My 4GB micro and 2GB SD seem so insignificant. 50GB would be great. I fear I suffer from hard drive envy.

The iPod Mini's - 4GB, 6GB use Microdrives (CF)
The bigger Ipods (60GB) have laptop HDs and the battery is pretty big.

If Axims were cheaper and "cool" I bet Dell could swing a deal and get more ROM (or I wish, RAM!) onboard.

Hey Crash,

Do you have a case that fits your Axim when that big 3300 battery is attached to it?

Just curious,
Monk

Monk,

Sorry about the late reply. I moded my PDAir metal case for the extended battery by opening up the flaps but the back of the Axim doesn't touch the back of the case. It looks pretty strange. The door has serious difficulty closing. I think I'm going to remove the door entirely. It looks ok. I wouldn't recommend it. I think I may move to a pouch setup anyway.

Thanks for the info. I ordered the Piel Frama case that fits the 3300 battery. It looks okay. Gotta love your battery life, eh?

Thanks again
