Is this true or not? Card speed in Axim
I can't find the thread but I think it was from user Ogopogo but not sure. The discussion was memory card speed. I thought someone said that the memory card speed doesn't matter once you put the card in your Axim because it only reads and writes at a fixed speed. Therefore the only advantage on getting a fast Mem card is when you use it on your Desktop PC card reader. Anyone know if this is true or not? Or did I read the post wrong, Thanks.

I think what I said was that the Axim cannot utilize the performance of high speed cards. Anyway, that's what I usually say. Whether it is a hardware or software issue, or maybe due to both, I don't know. My cards do feel equally fast/slow in the Axim. But in the card reader they display very tangible performance differences.

Ok thanks, Interesting, do you happen to know if when you benchmark with pocket mechanic is it taking the axim slot out of the loop, benchmarking on the card only?

Also, do you have a general idea of what memory card speed that you stop noticing any difference on your Axim? For folks interested in saving money on memory card purchases this would be helpful to get an idea of. For example why buy a 60x or 150x if the axim uses speeds below this level? This could save me and others a lot of money. People who don't mind waiting for files to copy on their desktop PC card reader. I would rather save money than save time in this area. Thanks in advance.

True, Fast cards only make a difference in your card reader.

It depends what you want to do with it.

If you run programs that access/search a large database (GPS software) or you want to watch high quality video, you will probably benefit from the difference in performance between base (unrated X) cards and a higher speed card.

What they mean is...

If you have a card that can read 10MB/sec that doesn't mean the Axim will. In fact, the highest reported speed of any card (CF or SD) on an axim was around 1.4MB/sec.

On my Axim x50v (A05 rom), I have a Kingston 2GB elite pro CF card which benchmarks @ 1.18mb/sec read, .12MB/sec write. That's significantly faster then the 1gb Sandisk CF I bought with the unit which benchmarks @ .18 read, .05 write.

Do you see what I'm saying?

The Kingston Elite pro is supposed to be able to read 6-10mb/sec. In a Camera it would. But not in the axim.

There's a thread in this section where peeps posted their benchmark results. Use that as a guide for boosting you Axim's performance.
