No more Geeks.com for me....

For interested parties, I sent back the microdrive where it was tested "defective." They never emailed me or any contact. I found out after going back to the website where they have a way to email. :realmad: It took several days to get a response, which didn't answer my only question of whether they were going to replace or refund. So I sent an email directly, and several days later (today - order originally place 11/6) that they were issuing a refund for the item and tax. So I'm out shipping both ways, about $10, and have nothing to show but a wasted three weeks.
Oh yeah, they never even said "sorry" or any apology for the delay or defective merchandise.

Geeks.com won't be getting my business again! :uglyhamme

Ranger Jay - i'll let you know if my new geeks ST1 5GB card works. I had a different experience w/ the geeks. It always depends on who you speak with - I demanded that i shouldn't have to pay for return shipping for a CF that did not work as advertised. So, they e-mailed me a Fedex label and so far I have wasted no money as I had free shipping to begin with.

Pls read my recent post below - I have a feeling that you also had the refurbished one, too.

This is my very first post:

LHR I bought the refurbished (90-day warranty) Seagate ST1 5GB w/ FW 3.08 from geeks.com ($104 reg price, but only paid $93.60 w/ promo code) and it does NOT work on my X51v.

A friend of mine picked up the brand new ST1 5GB (1yr warranty) selling for less!!! ($99.99) at the geeks CA store and it DOES work on his x50v!!!

Key differences:
Refurb ST1 5GB details: (Does NOT work on my x51v)
-Geek Part #: ST650211CF-U
-P/N: 9AF212-220
-has FW: 3.08 on the label
-Price: $104.00

NEW ST1 5GB: (Works!!! on my friends' x50v)
-Geek Part #: ST650211CF
-P/N: 9AF212-001
-No FW label
-Price: $99.99

So, based on this I called the geeks and I'm sending back my refurbished unit and buying the new one, which I'm now getting for $89.99!!! and I was even able to use my original promo! Can't wait to see if it'll work on my x51v.

I've checked though several pda & camera forums and it seems like the Seagate cards that tend to work are those with no "FW" labels and P/N #s ending in "001" Can anyone with a working/non-working ST1 confirm this?

Apparently, the FW (firmware) makes them IDE only devices.

BTW, if you order from the geeks, be sure to go to bensbargains.net or techbargains to see if they have a "10% off & free shipping" promo code. They might have some thanksgiving special coming up. Happy turkey day, everyone.

Yeah but Don't Panic, do you think it's worth it though??? I'm using a 512MB SD card and it's just too small for my needs. (Oh hell, 1-2GBs for me is *STILL* to small.) Anyway, with memory prices constantly dropping I mean is it worth spending over $200 for one?

10% off entire order - geeks coupon valid until 1/31/06

CJ - follow the instructions on this link for the geeks 10% off coupon http://www.edealinfo.com/Coupons/computergeeks.shtml - if it doesn't work, call the geeks and they'll do it for you - also, at that point you should ask them to throw in free shipping for the hassle (of you having to call them long distance and the long wait). That's the way, I got my 10% & free shipping. That'll bring the price down to $89.99 for a 5GB CF card, can't beat that! and no worries about having to file claims like in eBay. BTW, in the future use google to find these promos, i.e., "geeks promo" or "geeks coupon," etc.

Ruffman - when you speak to the geeks, they'll give you their script of "when you purchase something at Best Buy and you return it, does Best Buy refund your gas money?" - well, such a ridiculous statement, deserves an equally ridiculous reply - just say "I walk to Best Buy!!!" - usually, they give up and tell you to ignore their geeks RMA e-mail and that within 24 hrs, you'll get an RMA shipping label e-mailed from Fedex. If you get a persistent person (usually a newbie) then state that they are doing illegal advertising as the ST1 5GB is described in the geek site as being CF compatible and even lists the Axim X50V as compatible. Last resort, is to speak to a supervisor or hang up and talk to a different person. Yes, since you had the P/N 945212-220 & FW 3.08, it won't work. So far, everyone that has a working ST1 has a P/N 9AF212-001 with no "FW" label at all. The P/N might stand for the manufacturer's Product Number, and from what I've seen, it needs to at least end in "-001" - I imagine that's how they would be able to differentiate the IDE-only vs. the IDE & CF compatible cards.

No, I haven't received mine yet, as it's stuck "In Queue for Shipment" since they're closed until next Monday!

Probably not. Search this board, I remember this card has been discussed here before. I seem to recall a post which quoted a Seagate spokesperson saying that their MicroDrives were made for MP3 players only and would not work in other devices.

Actually, the x50v is listed as a compatible device. My microdrive should be here on Wednesday. I am hoping for the best!

I wouldn't be surprised if the price dropped before Christmas and stayed way below what I payed after that. That's what usually happens when I decice to buy a memory card regardless of the time of year (I call it the early adopter blues. ).

I actually got the 4GB card for my JasJar which only has an SD slot. I hated the idea of not having enough memory to play with on each device. So for me it was worth it. Besides by the time the price drops there is usually an announcemnet of a bigger card soon to be released. I just buy them when I think I need them and don't worry about what could have been.
