try pocket mechanic

Anton's pocket mechanic is pretty decent http://www.antontomov.com/products/pocket_mechanic.php

You can download it right into your axim and install the cab files

Never had much luck with PocketMechanic; try SK Tools instead.

Thanks for answers. I am sorry for not replying yesterday. I am in Morocco and here the internet is not very reliable.
I have tried to instal them both but no success.
I did hard reset (how stupid I am) because I thought this would resolve the card issue. Unfortunately it did not, so now I don't have my resco explorer which I used for unzipping files.
If I manage somehow to resolve the card issue I would have at least one of my backup files available and then I will get all my software back onto my pda.
Could I find any of those utilities as self-extracting files so I can run them straight onto my x51v?
Another option is to instal software that will instal those utilities on my pda. Do you know of any?

And the last question is about this download manager. Why the hell do we have it as preinstalled? It seems to download and install files but how?
Thanks for help

A lot of software is deployed as both .exe files and .cab files. The former require a PC for installation. The latter can be downloaded to the PDA and installed there using the CabInstall utility.

What "download manager"??

I finally received the microdrive yesterday evening. Unfortunately it has firmware 3.04 and is not useable in my Axim. I hosed my Axim trying to format it using SKTools and had to do a hard reset. I'm going to be sending it back today.

so our best bet is to guarantee compatible parts by using hitachi microdrives. they have retail 4gb cards for 110 dollars after rebates.

I bought the Seagate ST1 5GB card ST650211CF from geeks.com. It looks like it's a open box and the card have some sticker marks on it. I am a bit disappointed.

anyhow, my card reader can read it but my x50v cannot *recongise* the card. I cannot find it in its explorer. Do I need to setup anything for x50v to read it??

PLEASE HELP~

Sounds like you got one that is incompatible with the Axims. Does it have FW: 3.04 or FW: 3.08 on it?

x50v is in here
I'm not sure if someone else has already said this ( I started reading the post from the start, and when I saw this, I felt to reply ) but this pdf file is for "Seagate PHOTO DRIVE" which is the retail version of the microdrives. The 4-5-6 Gb versions are not out yet, but the 8GB version is out just a week ago. I didn't try it myself, but it is a retail version that SHOULD work with x50v and it is only 220$ . I think that is a great deal...

yet, 8gb is a lot for me... I'm searching for a reliable, 4 / 5 / 6 GB CF drive (microdrive or not) for about 100$... I hope I can find :/ and a 2 GB SD card for lower than 100$ would also be fine :D

I just got my 4GB Hitachi Microdrive, US$120 including delivery to Australia, and when I start up my X50v it asks:

"Unrecognized Card
Enter the name of the device driver for this card. For information, see the card manufacturer's documentation."

I assume this means I've received a Microdrive which isn't compatible with my X50v. Any suggestions?

Also, how on earth do you remove the CF Microdrive once it goes in? There is no ridge like there was on the blank.

You put a piece of tape on either side of the MD such that about a half inch is sticking out, then glue those loose ends together. You do that before you insert the MicroDrive...

Now that its in I'd try this: remove the SD card or SD placeholder. Get a piece of really adhesive tape and try to stick it to the MD. The empty SD card slot gives you about 3mm of space above the MD. Use a knife to tigten the connection between the MD and the tape. Then try using the tape to slowly pull the MD out. For this to work you'll probably have to angle the tape downwards a little while pulling.

Can anyone comment on whether my "Unrecognized Card" issue means the card is not compatible? I will need to return it soon if it is incompatible. I solved the "how do I remove the CF" question by using my wife's eye brow tweezers.

Quite possibly. Try formatting it in a card reader to see if that helps. I would not be optimistic, though.

You're bound to have more luck with an "Unrecognized Card" error msg which inherently means that your PDA's CF interface has detected something - as opposed to no feedback whatsoever, like with some ST1 5GB cards that have the CF interface disabled.

I've heard people with this problem usually format their cards via a card reader using Windows formatting utility (assuming your CF card is 4-6 GB, you might need to format it as FAT 32 w/ 4KB cluster size) To be sure contact your card's manufacturer.

I would stay away from using Pocket mechanic or SK Tools to check for errors - those utilis might cause you to lose data on your card - your best bet is using Windows trusty and reliable chkdisk utilities. Good luck.

I've got one (new) from geeks. it does not work. It is the right Geek part number but different seagate P/N and FW label. Damn.

-Geek Part #: ST650211CF
-P/N: 9AF212-220
-has FW: 3.04 on the label

It's a combination of what LHR have mentioned
