I agree, that if money is not a factor, go for the solid state memory. That being said, I have been very happy with my 6gb microdrive (money is a factor for me). As for the battery consumption, it doesn't seem to be as big an issue as some would have you believe. The microdrive is also very rugged, so the moving parts issue also doesn't seem to be as much of an issue as some would have you believe.
The biggest most legitimate issue with microdrives is that some are not designed to be compatible with PDAs, usually those harvested from other devices are most likely to fall into this category. The latest Hitachis are specifically listed as compatible with Axim X50s, by Hitachi, on their web site.
I'd also recommend sticking with the latest versions of the manufacturer's microdrives for best performance and battery efficiency.
