Card slot question.
I expect delivery of a new Axim X51v (624Mhz) tomorrow. I figure it will have a 256MB Compact Flash card in the CF slot.

Am I right about that?

If so, then does it make sense to purchase a 1 or 2GB SD card for the other slot?

I do not plan on loading it with music or movies. Just want extra storage.

Thanks

Not sure why you would think it comes with a CF card, unless you are buying it form someone who left one in there. But as for the questions on cards, a 1GB of each is great to have. But if you don't plan on movies or music, you can probably get away with something smaller. Good Luck~

I am buying it from Dell and it says:

RAM: 64MB SDRAM

ROM: 256MB Flash memory

And I figured the 256MB is a flash card inside.

Am I wrong?

Thanks

Yes, you are.

The x51v has 256MB of flash memory internally, and also has a free CF card slot and a free SD card slot. So, for instance, if you put a 256MB CF flash card in the slot, you would have a total of 512 MB of flash memory. The memory is kept separately by the system, much like different disk drives on a desktop. When you install things or save files, you have to choose which one they go on.

EDIT: If you're asking if the internal flash memory has the basic form factor / interface of a CF card, or if it's removable, etc, etc, I have no idea. It may or may not be. But it is definitely not externally accessible, or easily removable.

That helps a lot. I was looking at sandisk.com and see different cards. Ultra IISD, Extreme, and plain SD. What does anyone recommend?

Any regular card will work fine. The only time you will see a speed difference in the "high speed" cards is when you use a card reader. The Axim does not use these speeds. So find a good deal and get it. You can also use the Search feature here on AximSite as many of these questions have been covered. Might be a little faster then waiting for someone to respond. Good Luck~

1GB SD & 1GB CF cards are a great "combo." I would guess
you purchased online "outside" of Dell.

Good luck also. Great PDA and more than work, fun,
an obsession for sure. You're in the right site to make friends,
learn from the "geek" experience, and gain the know how to use
the Ax.

I would be careful of counterfeit memory cards though. I just bought a 1GB SanDisk Ultra II SD card off of EBay for $70. When I got it my X51v wouldn't recognize it, after talking with SanDisk support it turns out it was an elaborate chinese fake. Not saying all Ebay card sellers are scammers, just a warning. After getting my $ back from the scammer I bought the same exact card at Best Buy and it works fine.

Most of my cards have come from www.newegg.com They just seem to have good deals when I am in the market.

Yeah, eBay is The Jungle. Be careful out there...

I ordered cards from SimpleTech, Adorama, MWave, Dell, and Newegg. They all have been true and reliable.

Adorama can be on the slow side but carry stuff others do not have.

Dell charge tax here in Taxes (Texas). But sometimes a special sale can be combined with coupons which brings prices down.

Newegg ship fast and are usually cheap. I rely on them more and more.

Have a 1GB SD and 1 GB CF card, both Scandisk, installed
on my Ax X50.

Now have a 1 GB SD and 1 GB CF card, also Scandisk, sitting in
my top desk drawer. I'm going to install 'em in the X50v I
just purchased.

Question is this, when I purchased the Scandisk SD card
didn't notice the memory card "opens" and can be used in a USB port.
Comes with a key chain holder too!

Anyone ever see or try one of these? How can they make it
so small? Seems a bit "whimsy" to me. We'll see.
