How should an SD card be used?
Hey guys, I know the question sounds real dumb... The obvious answer would be, "to store shit," but my question goes a little more in depth than that.

I have had my axim for about a week now, and along the way I have managed to use up about 80mb of the storage space that is already on there stock. Just recently i managed to get my hands on a GB sd card for free and i'm wondering what is the best way to use it. For example if I install a program on the SD card, will the program icon still appear in the programs menu?

2.) I noticed some people don't use their cards to store programs. They use the rom for that and then they use the sd cards strictly for storing media. What is the reason for that?

3.) When opening an app that is on an SD card, will it be slower?

4.) Will a pda run faster if there are no data stored onto the rom, and all of it stored on the sd card?

5.) anything else i should know?

1) If you install to an SD or CF card there is no problems - for all intesive purposes it is just like installing to the RAM or ROM. The only issue is sometimes with today screen plugins because it usually takes a couple of seconds to detect the card from the time you turn the PDA on.

2) I use my SD card for programs. Today screen plugins, and media players I put in ROM and other programs to the SD. If you have multiple SD cards then I can see it would be better to install all programs to ROM - so you can easily switch cards and not lose your programs.

3) Maybe a little but you probably will not notice it. As I said before the main issue is that it takes a few seconds to mount the SD card when you first turn the PDA on.

4) No. Makes no difference. Just don't store databases or things that get written often to the ROM because it is slow to write to.

5) Check the Memory Help for Newbies and my Storage card tutorials from my signature. Should be everything.

Cheers

How about for RAM (main memory) to run programs? Can you use an SD/CF card for more RAM?

Thanks.

Not sure exactly what you mean - the RAM is limited (64MB) and it is split into Program and Storage under WM2003SE. Basically the less stuff you intall to RAM (Main Memory) the more you will have spare the run programs. The OS automatically allocates this memory but you can use the slider to "force" extra program memory.

Hope that helps.

I meant, is it possible for the OS to allocate program memory on SD/CF card? Meaning using the SD/CF for more RAM to be used by [run] programs, as well for media/file storage.

Nope. RAM is RAM and you only have what you are given when you bought the PPC. X50/X51 series is 64MB.

I think you can send your device to PocketPC Techs and they can do an upgrade to 128MB if you need it.

New myself to PDA's but, needed one, needed another.
Axim X50 520mz, gave it to my girlfriend 'cause she was always
needing MY PDA. I downgraded to an Ax X50v. Let her keep the
better Axim. Wow, try VGA!

Both the Ax's have 1GB SD and 1GB CF cards. Why? Just to
have André Rieu, amongst others "with." Or André Bochelle.

Programs I "plunk" in either the CF or SD card. Wherever I
feel like at the moment. Never noticed much of a slowdown
besides, at 58+ where am I goin'?
