New here of course. Hi all!
I just received my new baby, x50v. I've been looking through all the great software available and I'm really excited.
I haven't done anything with it yet as I am waiting for a Seagate 5GB microdrive to arrive in a couple days. Yes it's a 001 part number, direct from manufacturer and not locked. Got it at Geeks.
Yes, as the title mentions, I am thinking on installing everything to that drive. And putting mp3's, videos, etc., there as well.
I'v read all the things about the risks of the drives and I plan on backing the drive up every couple days.
Ok so here's my reasoning for doing all this on one drive.
Originally I wanted this PDA for backing up images from my digital camera while on the road. Insert the SD card from the cam into the always empty SD slot and backup the images to the CF microdrive.
Also, as we know, CF microdrives are larger and will most likely continue to be so in the future than SD, so I want to force myself to get accustomed to using them. Especially when the 20GB and 40GB ones come around.
I like simplicity too. Keeping everything all on one drive. Really shouldn't have to worry about installation space either. I have already about 60 programs I want to install.
Aside from the stabilization of microdrives and such, I was wondering about periphials.
I know there are some SD ones but moreso CF.
I plan on a BT GPS and really don't need much more, but I did want to leave my options open.
Unless most peripheals will be available in SD in the future, then I won't worry about tying up the CF slot constantly.
I also like the idea of swapping out an SD card more often for different temp files I want to access.
So in closing, I know PDA setups are all our own personal preferences, and I would like to go with that setup I mentioned, I am just inquiring here to see if you guys think it would be absolutely crazy to do so.
Not so much from the stabilization risk (as I mentioned I would backup often), nor from the battery life thing (as I will always carry a spare) - but from a program access point. Would it be way too slow? I try to think of a PC hardrive. It's able to keep up. But would I burn the heck out of this MD with the constant access so bad so that it would need replacement like every couple months?! If it's more reasonable in its life, I won't mind. I'll have a backup.
As a side note, my x50v came with Mobile 2003 and the rom is A05. I was thinking on doing the M5 upgrade but I've read all sorts of things here. I may just take the risk. I like to keep current. Also I read something about M5 having DirectX support and it will open up an arena for much nice games.
That's cool!
But I was concerned that all this software I plan on installing might not be compatible with M5.
I'm talking about most of the software as featured in the recent issue of Pocket PC mag.
Just had to mention that in addition. No sense making a whole other thread.
Alright, well I've rambled long enough. I'd REALLY appreciate any input here.
Thanks a bunch!
Good day!
