Recommendations on 2GB SD
Hi, I am looking for recommendations on low priced 2GB SD cards for my Axim x5 Advanced. The following are available on newegg or pricegrabber for around $100. Does anyone have any experience/recommendations with these as far as compatibility and reliability/durability? Nice transfer speeds might be nice too.

A-DATA
RiDATA (Ritek)
TwinMOS Ultra-X
Transcend
PNY
Patriot
ATP

Thanks!

RiData, Transcend, and PNY are fine choices. I've never heard of the other brands. PNY is probably the most famous of the ones mentioned.

In my x50v, the 2GB 150x RiData SD achieves the best benchmarks results. It is also really really fast in a SD1.1 compliant card reader, almost as fast as an Extreme III card. A 4GB 150x Transcend card that I have performs almost as well as the 2GB RiData in the x50v, but is much slower in a card reader even when formatted with FAT16 and 64k clusters.

I doubt that a 2GB Transcend would be materially faster than a 4GB model considering that the file system is basically the same.

Since I do not know the A-Data card I'll recommend the 2GB 150x RiData. It is a marvellous card.

I am using a Patriot 2gb SD card in my X52v with no problem at all This is the same card I took out of my X5 when my X51v arrived. It works fine in both PDA's

In my note above, there is no X52v - just a typo - it is really an X51v - sorry!

I got the RiData Pro 120x 2GB card from Newegg, works fine - only thing is that its "2GB", 1.88 GB (@1024 per k) comes to 2.024 GB formatted space. If i'd known this beforehand I might have gotten something else, but for $100 and the fact that it works well it didn't bother me much.

Sorry to get off topic but if I add Kingston highspeed and sandisk ultra 2 into the list, which ones will still be best of the bunch (in terms of stability and fewer corrupted data)?

I would also like to know people's experience with these durability-wise. Some people have remarked toward poor card enclosures. I know sometimes the read/write switches get loose and mess things up. Are all these cards comparable in that regard to being taken in and out of devices, or is one particularly going to do better in this regard? Which brands should I watch out for being bad to this affect? Thanks again.

The SanDisk Ultra II is a great card but in a compatible card reader the RiData 150x is significantly faster, almost as good as the Extreme III. The Ridata is significantly faster, too. Both cards have been flawless in terms of reliability, although I must admit that my Ultra is older and I have used it a lot more. IMO the Kingston is too pricey when compared with the RiData.

Your mention of the read/write switch reminds me of the first time I actually used the thing on any of my cards. One day last year I decided to try it on my - until then trusty - SimpleTech 1GB. Bad idea! The switch shot off and could not be found again.

OTOH, the switch on my 150x Transcend works only too well (not). Each time I insert the card into a card reader normally, the insertion movement will catch the switch and set it to the lock position; sometimes I need four careful tries to get it in just right.

But otherwise both cards are fine. The engineer's last resort, duct tape, fixed the SimpleTech.

I'm also in the market for one of these for my new axim. Do I need a reader to format it, or transfer data on it? or can I do that via ActiveSync. Thanks

No. No. Yes. But transfers in a card reader are much faster.

Anyone knows what is the speed rating for normal Sandisk 2GB SD? I've a 512MB Sandisk SD and surprised it performs on par with my highspeed Apacer 60X 1GB SD. I thinking of getting 2GB but the price is still expensive.
