From my experience - avoid Microdrives. They drain the battery too fast. Get a smaller SD or CF solid-state ram chip - they're not worth the hassle.

Yes, alzellogin, a MicroDrive is a type II CompactFlash (CF) device. As OMFG has stated, they do tend to drain the battery more than Flash memory. Search the forums on ways to save your battery when using a MicroDrive. A couple ways: store frequently used files in Built-In-Storage or a SD card. Use your MicroDrive for media files, such as music (.mp3, .wmv) or video (.wma) and set your player to microdrive mode. A free player, TCPMP, does this. Find it at www.corecodec.org .

microdrive
I have a 4gb sd and 8gb microdrive on x50v. At this point I use the 4 for media, 8 for non-critical programs, and main storage for critical programs. I sense but have not measured battery drain. I have 2 1800mah batteries that say they will last 3 hrs fully charged....and i am never far from a poweradapter...i am very satisfied with performance. I might add that spb applications work beautifully.

buy a cf card instead not microdrive then you can use both sd and cf at the same time and it will not drain your battery

I have a 1gb CF card, 512mb SD card and a 8gb CFII micro drive. It is true that the micro drive uses more battery juice vs eithor a standard SD or CF card. I got my 8gb CFII drive for $154 and my 1gb CF card for $50. I have two 1100mah batteries that I rotate as needed during the day. The biggest drain is when I play movies from my drive. I keep the 8gb CFII and the 512mb SD cards always in my unit. I use my 1gb CF card for backing up my unit and then remove it. For me the issue was needed space beyond resonably priced standard CF cards. The micro drives are way less expensive.

Rule of thumb - don't put often-needed files on the microdrive, and you'll be fine - movies are probably the only thing that should go onto there, outside of huge files like GPS maps. Otherwise, I've found the drain is minimal, with the proper usage of the drive and programs which can cache information ahead of time, which means fewer drive accesses are required to get your data (and by doing so, reduces the power usage of the microdrive). Otherwise, if you're intending it for storage of music or programs, get the CF card instead.

Either way, the CF card WILL pull more power than the SD card will, reducing your battery life when both devices are used; that's something you won't be able to avoid, unless you keep your CF slot empty. However, you can reduce the amount of power usage if you're smart in your file allocation; put the important, most-often accessed stuff on SD or BIS, and then keep the CF free for things that aren't needed as often whether you're using microdrive or solid-state.
