How would this card compare to the seagate 4gb card? The seagate is a bit cheaper without rebate. Whats the advantage?

Thanks

Nice deal!

The Seagate is a MicroDrive. The $129.99 4GB CF card is a flash memory card. As for the pros and cons of flash versus MicroDrive, this question has been asked and answered many times, so search the forums for "MicroDrive".

I was just checking at Ecost. The cost there is 139 before rebate. I don't know if the rebate is still valaid, though. A month ago the same card was $279. What's up?

Just ordered the 4gb card. Going to use it to load all the GPS maps into my Axim. $129 after rebate is an awesome price!

Hmm... tempting. What are the write speeds? I'm wondering how long it would take to copy a 700MB movie to it.

I'd expect 2.5MB/s to 5MB/s transfers. It is hard to tell because these cards are not guaranteed to meet any X-rating. They could be 10x or 60x. The quality of your card reader is another factor. (I have a 70x CF card which gets 7.2MB/s read, 5MB/s write in an older SanDisk ImageMate 8-in-1, and 9.5MB/s read, 7.3MB/s write in a recent SanDisk ImageMate 12-in-1 reader.)

2.5MB/s ==> 4:40 minutes
5.0MB/s ==> 2:20 minutes

per 700MB movie.

I've had one of these card for a year, and I think you'll find that they're only 4x. It takes me a good half hour to get a 700MB file onto the thing.

Ouch. Excepting my very first card I never bought below 60x and now won't buy below 120x. Anyway, even that first card, a 256MB SanDisk SD, was faster than 4x; about 14x or a bit over 2MB/s, and that was in 2003. Surely the current cards would be faster than that!? Are you sure your card reader is decent?

I'm using a PCMCIA adapter rather than a card reader. I'd always thought that all the Sandisk blues, whether SD or CF were 4x or thereabouts. I've never been concerned, since they perform fine in my PDA. I'll tell you one thing - it took a loonnngggg time to transfer a 2GB Wikipedia to my CF card!! But my 800MB copy of GWTW plays perfectly. It's nice to have a 4.5 hour movie for my spare time.

Wow, dlangton. I think you have convinced me not to get this CF card. I used to transfer files through ActiveSync before I got an SD card reader and I cannot go back to those kind of speeds again.
