Microdrives and tape?
I just ordered a Seagate 8gb and was wondering what all the references to putting sticky tape on the drive were referring to - I've never used a MD before so clearly there's a problem I don't know about - can anyone elucidate??

Thanks

Peter

Most microdrives are just a little too small to pull out of the slot easily. They include a little lip that you can just barely grab with a finger nail to get them out. The tape is recommended so that you can pull them out a little easier. I don't personally do it, but apparently a lot of others do.

I have a strip of transparent tape on the side of my Hitachi MD. Works great to easily remove the drive. It's crazy hard without it .

I have been forced to do the same thing with clear very strong packaging tape. If you do this be sure and NOT cover the small hole in the back of your drive. My tape tab is about 5/16 wide and starts just where the hole mentioned above ends and where the end of my SD slot is. The tap is formed on the top of the drive and from the top is about 1/4" high. I fold the tab into the open SD slot and then put my SD card in place. This hids the tab and protects the top of your unit from damage due to the extended tab. I was not going to do this but it proved almost impossible to remove my 8gb micro drive any other way. I have movies on my drive and using activesync to change then is just way to slow for me so I use a card reader for that process. Just make sure you use good quality very strong packaging tape, not masking tape or scotch tape.

Here's a picture of the tape on micro-drive trick. It's really useful and it's very important not to cover the hole. (as rlarson_mn said)....

I use the half-transparent tape that you can write on and which is xerox proof (will not reflect). Attach one strip on the front, another at the back of the card, then press the ends which stick out together. Next cut them to length, a half-inch or so will do.
