Newbie Info Needed
I am just starting to play with the Flash Cards on my X50v. I have my Teletpye GPS maps on a 512 SD card, (it holds the whole East Coast), and had a 512 CF card. Now that I am looking at putting DVDs on it 512 isn't so big. How big of a Microdrive will the X50v recognize. I know better then to have the Activesync handle it, so if you know of a good reader, (not the kodak usb 1.0 piece of poop I am using now) let me know too.

Thanks

Ok i don't know how big of a microdrive an x50v can recognize, heres a link to an insanely cheap x51v compatible microdrive. As for a card reader i don't know, mine has one built in

I don't believe there is a limit. Basically, how ever big of a drive you can find it should recognize.

As for a card reader. Most generic USB 2.0 readers will do just fine. Ecost and Buy.com have good deals on them all the time.

I have the Seagate 8gb micro drive you 'linked' to. It works fine in the X51V. One draw back is once the CF micro drive is inserted and seated in the CF II slot in the X51V it is almost impossible to pull out. Others have suggested (and I did this) to put very strong packaging tape to form a tab to assist with the removal of the micro drive. There is another thread covering this on this site. It sound really strange but really does work very nice IMHO.

The Axim handles as big a MicroDrive as you can buy today. That is, 8GB. They don't make 'em any bigger yet. As for the card reader, I have had the best of experiences with SanDisk's ImageMate readers. The latest model is a 12-in-1 and costs about $25 at Amazon. You want the version with a yellow "ESP" label on the package because that is the one which supports cards speeds of 120x and above. The others do max. 66x - which has plenty of headroom for MicroDrives but does not utilize today's fast flash memory card speeds.

Another n00bie question...

I got a Dell Axim x50...love it. Got one 1 gig CF card and two 1 gig SD cards. What I'm finding is I am always running out of room. I've pretty much decided that a microdrive is the way to go.

However...

Being the clumbsy absent minded software engineer geek that I am, I have the tendancy to sometimes drop my PPC (I have it in a rhinoskin aluminum case on the belt clip) and I've found that it'll slip off when I don't sit juuuust the right way in a chair/car. It never drops more than a few feet, but it takes a licking and keeps on ticking. What I'm worried about with a Microdrive (with the moving parts) might not be as forgiving.

Anyone have an answer to this one? I looked through and saw _nothing_ on durability of the drives.
