storage cards: insert/remove while device is on or off?
I frequently take out my SD card from my x50v WM5 to add files to it and then pop it back in. One annoying thing that I've found is that the device turns on when I do that. No big deal. The real issue is that when I run resco explorer to get to the new files I just added, I don't see them. I do a refresh and it's still not there.

Eventually, what I've found to work is with the device still on, to pull out the card and stick it back in. THEN it sees the new files. Anybody know what is going on?

One time I do see the file but it was zero byte for some reason. I put the SD card back on my PC and it's still zero bytes. Somehow it got corrupted. Or once I did a scandisk on the card from the PC and it creates a found.000 folder, indicating there was probably an invalid fat table entry. And it's not as if I don't wait for the files to copy completely to the SD before yanking it out from the media reader. I actually do the 'safely remove' procedure. Or I open the file on the SD card from the PC to make sure it's fine.

Am I doing something wrong? I don't think there is anything wrong with my card. Should I be removing and inserting my card into the device with it on so it knows to clear some sort of file table cache or something? I think that is it. The device must not know that I've changed the card and the device is still using some sort of cache copy of the fat table and that would lead to some corruption.

How is everyone else's experience?

Thanks!

I dont know whats going on, but I suggest you just turn on the device before you take it out/put it back in.

Whichever you do, always count to ten before you turn the device off or add/remove a storage card with the device on.

Yep, soft reset seems to be the solution for me too!

The key here is to not have the card being used at the time of its removal IMHO. I remove my SD and Seagate 8gb micro drive all of the time but I always make sure the card is not in use.

I've adopted the rule to only insert and remove the card when the device is fully awake. No problems so far. I think a soft reset is a little too much for such a simple task.

Funny, since replying to this post it seems everytime I change my card with the power on I have to do a soft reset, system hangs... at least on my iPAQ...

I am not patient enough to count to 10 or even perform a soft reset! It would defeat the purpose, IMO.
I do make sure to close programs that access the card before removing the card.

When writing files to the card in a card reader it is important that either (a) write caching is disabled, or (b) the "Safely Remove Hardware" option is used. (This is simply a way of flushing write buffers and unmounting the card cleanly.)

Sometimes I find it necessary to use the View -> Refresh option in Resco Explorer before I can see new files. Other than that I do not experience any problems.
