I am new to this. I have a Axim X 51 with WM5 and use Activesync. I would like to download some music from a CD (MP3 - burned), to the desktop, and then into my Axim. However, my windows media player will not sync between my Axim and desktop. I would consider an alternative. Does anybody have any ideas? I already have GSPlayer, TCPMP, and Windows Media Player on my Axim.
personally i use a card reader and just copy it across
(its 10 times quicker too :) )

What version of Windows Media Player do you have on your desktop? If you upgraded windows media player on your desktop, you have to reinstall activesync in order for you to sync directly to your axim.
If you plan to store your music on flash media, either SD or CF, I would use a card reader and just copy the files directly to the card.
Thanks. I have read a little bit about card readers, but I am not familiar with which ones are good and how do you use them? Do you slide them right into the SD or CF slot? How do you copy music onto them. See, I told you I am new to all of this. Any info/recommendations would be great.
Extra drive appears in windows... just copy your stuff to it.

I use a card reader also. I have a 8gb micro drive (CF card) that I put my music onto using the card. Just cut and paste the mp3's into the card and then put into your card slot on the Axim (SD or CF) and locate the file(s) you want to play using your music application. Same process for a movie. I use my micro drive for large files like mp3's, movie files, pdf files and larger excel files.
You can also use your axim just like a card reader. You can use microsoft activesync. Upgrade to the newest one, I think it's 4.1 or 4.2, then near the top of the sync screen is an explore button. It let's you explore all the files on your PPC. If you double click the PPC Icon, you'll find the file that says "storage Card." You can then copy and past all files right to your storage card.
NOTE*: Transferring files this way takes a bit more time as the files are being converted one a time as you paste them to the card. My advice on that is make a file of everything you want to copy, such as music, select the folder and copy and paste it to the storage card. Then just sit back and relax!
It may take a while, but thus far it has saved me from buying a card reader. I know card readers are not that much, but this work just the same to me, so why bother? LOL
Using ActiveSync to partner and "Explore" your Ax is fine for music, but a card reader is much faster when dealing with video files.
Once you find a location on your Ax where you want to copy the mp3s to, all you have to do is drag-n-drop the files from the PC location to the PDA location.
I use a Transcend TS-RD13 USB card reader to copy large/multiple files to either a SD or CF card. I use TotalCommander for Windows to manage this process but any file management utility will do. The Transcend copied over 3GB of files over to my SD in under 4 minutes. Doing the same thing using ActiveSync would take SEVERAL hours. You don't have to go out and buy the Transcend, but it is one of the smallest 5-slot readers out there ( at 2.75" x 2.75" x 0.625" ) and is pretty fast. I also have a dedicated card reader in my tower system that is a reader and 3.5" floppy combo. It is made by Y-E Data but it is about 20% slower than the Transcend, but I still use it since the dirfference is only 8MB/s vs. 11MB/s.
Well, I feel a little silly/dumb right now. After further investigation of card readers and your information I now realize that it appears very easy to use a card reader:approve: . I just purchased one from e-bay. Thank you all for your help. It has been truly enlightening.
