SD vs CF - Using CF slot
Hi:

I'm pretty new to the digital storage stuff and I have a question regarding what type of format is better (more stable, faster)- CF or SD?

Also If i use a CF card in CF slot - I can't use a CF slot GPS unit for my 51v?

Also, what kinf of storage space would i need on my card if i need to have an almost complete map of western europe of it in tomtom5?
Would 2 gig suffice or do i really need a 4 gig version?

Let me know folks

Thanks!

Better/More Stable/Faster - doesn't really matter. Most people have had the most success with SD cards, though (not to mention they are smaller, and if you have a case they can fit in there - there should be some slots for them).

If you use a CF card you can't use it and the CF slot GPS at the same time, correct. However, as long as you are storing the data for the GPS program on the SD card, you should be just fine.

If you can afford the 4 gig, that might be good. At the same time, think of the price of a 2 gig and a 1 gig (or even 4, 1-gig cards), I bet that buying a few smaller ones might be cheaper than a 4 gig. (I do know that buying a 1 gig is cheaper than 2 512-meg, but as you are looking at the higher gig cards the prices multiply pretty badly sometimes).

One other thing you might want to consider. If you are taking a digital camera, it is good to be able to transfer some pictures off the card and onto another, via your PPC, so buy it might be good to buy a card that can be used for both purposes...

You should be able to get 4GB SD cards for less than $100 these days from a variety of manufacturers...at least in the U.S.
Transcend, A-DATA, Patriot, PQI, RiData are a few that come to mind that you should be able to get for $92 to $100.

Agreed - I just purchased a A-DATA SD 4GB card for €89,- here in europe. With these prices there is no reason to pick smaller cards anymore.

If you find a good price, think about using a BlueTooth GPS receiver. I have one. It doesn't protrude from the unit, you can carry that in a pocket or place it on the dashboard of your car. I recommend a non-slip pad on your dash for that. I'm not sure how the power consumption compares, as the BT receiver has to have BT running, and the CF receiver will be using system resources. The BT receiver, of course, will have its own, separate charging dongle.

Thanks a lot for replies folks! Really appreciated

I live in Toronto and so I'm a bit reluctant to buy sd cards from the states due to the border tax... However maybe someone can point me to the us store that has a good price so it will outweigh the excise payment? (Maybe someone knows some good deals in Toronto here?) So far the cheapest SD cards I saw here were Sandisk at Henry's for 120 or 130can$ for 2gig. I should check Costco perhaps.

Also can anyone comment on how 51v performs with the bluetooth gps unit?
I heard of dropped connections due to MS BT stack implementation in wm5. Is it really that bad and is there a fix for it? (I searched for bt fix on forums but there are too many threads beating around the same issue) Can anyone point me to a p age?

Also how long does it take to charge a bt gps receiver? If you place it on a dashboard can u hook it up to a powerpoint in the car at the same time? Same thing with Axim - can u charge it successfully while driving?

The reason I'm so meticuluos about this thing is that I'm planning a fairly long eurotrip this summer and I want to minimize the amount of headache I'm gonna have with 51v Stability is very important for me so I wanna make sure I'm getting a solid unit that won't keep me occupied with fixing its flaws most of the
time)

Thanks!

$120 is way too much. Factory direct has 2gb a-data SD's for $59.99 +tax

there are a few locations in Toronto. Look up the closest one to you. www.factorydirect.ca

Hello emo777,

I found the price on alternate.de, a german webshop - but if you check www.alternate.net you can select your country specifically. I checked prices for germany, uk and spain and all had a similiar price around the mentioned €89.

Happy shopping

Tigerdirect Canada ( http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...?EdpNo=2207208 ) has the A-Data 4GB 150x SD for $127. I am not sure whether this is CAD or not.

I went with SD for memory, so that I could use the GPS CF unit. As far as speed/dependable, doesn't matter much.

I went with the 1gb CF card from Amazon.com
