Question about fat and fat32 on CF and SD cards

HI, I have a lexar 1GB CF card and a Kinston 512mb SD card. Should I use fat or fat32 for these? I have downloaded flash format from cnetx and when I go to format the cards fat16 has an asterisk beside it for both cards. Does the asterisk mean this is the best format for these cards? Thanks
