@MrFalcon ...

on the device:

\My Documents\spreadsheets

is NOT the same levels as on the SD Card:

\SD Card\My Documents\spreadsheets

if you really pay attention to the explorer's address bar .. you would notice that the "SD Card" would count as the 1st level --->>> same as the "My Documents" on the device.

therefore...

on the device:

\My Documents\spreadsheets --->>> 2 level from root

and ...

\SD Card\My Documents\spreadsheets --->>> really counts as 3 level from root ...

I hope I laid that out to be less confusing :p

considering the "My Documents" on the device is counting the same as the "SD Card" folder if you really are counting level deep ;)

the link I gave to the alarm program FAQ section seems to indicated as the case :p

"If there is a file in the root of your storage card(s) named "ignore_my_docs", the Pocket PC file control (which we use) will look in all folders on the storage card. If that file does not exist, it will only look in My Documents on the storage card."

Yes, this is the same thing that Markfou said above and I confirmed it. And I suppose your right, it is a more consistent rule:

My point is that this is not how older versions of Windows Mobile worked. My old PocketPC started looking in "Storage Card/My Documents" and would search one level deep from there, giving the contents of all subfolders of "Storage Card/My Documents". In old versions you had to put files in that directory on a storage card in order for them to show up in applications. Now with WM5, you have to NOT put files in that directory. Or at least, not put files in subfolders of that directory, which is what one would expect people to do. I don't imagine many people just dump all their files in My Documents without organizing them.

So for me and others (I would assume), the upgrade to WM5 caused storage card files to suddenly and unexpectedly dissapear from Open File dialogs, which seems like a bad move to me.

Sorry, I meant does it automatically search subfolders of "SD Card/My Documents".

Anyway, I'm pretty sure that FAQ item pertains to the older versions of WM. The only time I found an ignore_my_docs file was on my old PocketPC, and it was automatically generated by WM. Maybe I'll try creating it and see what happens.

Having to create a blank file with a certain name was a ridiculous way of setting that behavior anyway. But instead of letting people set it in... oh, I don't know... the "Settings" window, they just set it to the way they think everybody should do and didn't give people the option of where they applications to look for their files.

Yes, you can download the ignore_my_docs file from that site, but it doesn't do anything when I put it on my storage card. Like I said, I think it only works with older versions of Windows Mobile.

I wrote a synopsis in the orginal post for anyone who is confused. Why did I do this? Well, apparently I suffer from the delusion that I have lots of free time and that it is not late at night. Enjoy!
