I'm trying to convince a friend to buy an axim instead of a ipod and he's interested in the max available storage memory you can have. He's thinking about buying an ipod but loves the axim i whipped out and showed off.
As big as he can afford to buy a SD or CF card. You can get a 2Gb of each kind for a good price. I also used both and reverted to the Axim as the quality of the axim output to headphones is better. I use GSPlayer as the software and also have X50 Mix installed. Both together gives me a better performance. The only Con is the battery life. You will probably only get 60% of the battery life with an Axim compare to the iPod but the output worth it.

The emphasise on what Frenchy said.
Currently 1GB & 2GB has the best GB/$ for SD cards.
For CF card, I'd leave it blank for future expansion or get at least 8GB which are tumbling down in price recently.
With the backlight turned off, a fully charged X51v should last well over 6hrs when playing MP3.
Biggest avaliable for SD is 4GB
Biggest for CF is 16GB (at an insane price). 8GB is the common biggest in form of Microdrive.

I have a X51V and a Photo iPod with a 60gb capacity. In my X51V I have a 8gb CF micro drive from Seagate and a 512mb SD card. I use my iPod for music, photos, backup of my original PC application disks, image backups of my notebook and desktop, backup of my PC data files, backup of my converted movies for my X51Vx, backup of my VX7000 phone data, backup of my utility applications I use for PC trouble shooting. I use my X51V as a Pocket PC first and then as a PIM.

It's a posting style I carried over from TGForumz. That is, total annihilation with a single post which anwsers all questions in detail.
I guess all the 28000+ posts and being a mod there meant something.:)

If I had to choose between an iPod and an Axim. I would choose a Axim hands down. I did.
How many MP3's do you seriously need to carry around with you ALWAYS. I mean, even 8gb is alot of MP3's. I have like 500 on my 8gb CF, along with a few movies games, backup, etc.
Just because you have lots of songs, doesn't mean you like them all. I have 500 on me at all times, and I prolly like half of them. I LOVE listening to music, but honestly it gets old. My buddy has a video Ipod and i wasn't impressed.
We paid about the same price for both units, but I could do so much more with mine. GPS, games, movies, wifi, bt. My gf has a 30gb ipod and you know where it is...? In the desk. Batteries aren't the best. Her's usually runs out before my axim does, unless i'm playing a hefty accerlerated game.
Yea the ipod has the storage benefit, but the Axim has usefulness on its side. If the ipod had wifi and bt, then it'd be a steal. But GPS is amazing to say the least. Plus having a internet connected pocketPC has saved me MANY times.
