Help! SD card not formatting!

My 512 mb sandisk does not want to format! It won't work in any of my stuff, and my laptop says it needs to be formatted. But when I click format, it says "this disk is write protected" or something like that. Followed by "The disk in drive E cannot be formatted". HELP!

Is it a new card?
Has it worked in your card reader before because it sounds like the old problem of the card reader not being new enough.
Have you checked the little lock switch?

Old card, not terribly old. Card reader is built into my Dell inspiron 9300 and works fine with my even older 256 sandisk. lock switch it up

You have the same laptop as me. My built in card reader dosen't work with any of my newer cards. External reader works perfectly. It's worth investing in a decent card reader just to be sure.

Check the little Lock Tab on the side of the card.

Try the unlock first... and if that doesn't work...

Invest in a card reader.....

My neighbor had a similar problem.... not sure why..... but I convinced him to get a card reader (told him I'd buy it from him if it didn't work )

but it worked :approve:

The thing is, it works with my much newer 1gb sd card. All are the same basic blue sandisk.

Then I'm thinkin' this particular SD Card is screwed.

If it's new &/or under any kind of warranty, take it back, ASAP.

Oh well, a 512M SD Card isn't such a great loss.

You can get a 1 or 2G for pretty cheap, if you shop around.
Both on eBay and in Brick & Mortar stores.
$30 tops (maybe after rebate), but prolly much cheaper, if you're a smart shopper.

Good Luck!.....:approve:

I think there might be more to this.....

I popped the card into my old digital camera, remembering that it has an option to format card. And that works, doesn't say anything about being write protected. Then I put it back into my compy, and it pops right up. Now I can open the drive without it saying "this drive is not formatted", before I couldn't even open it. It still says the same thing when I try to format it on the computer, but I can access the drive...

I had the same problem with one of my cards. Couldn't format on the PPC and couldn't format on my laptop through a reader. So I tried the format command from cmd prompt (on my laptop) and it worked. After that I didn't have any problems with the card.
