any Hitachi OEM MD with model no higher than 43C cannot be used by PDA or digital camera since they are not in CF mode. They are somehow configured as IDE mode by Hitachi.
Someone in other discussion group claimed that the "7Tools partition manager" or the RIO carbon MP3 player can solve this problem. Here is the more info. http://www.studio2f.com/misc/2004/03...omad_muvo2.php

It is my understanding (from reading literally hundreds of posts in various digicam forums) that the Rio Carbon 'solution' is simply that it can accept the later 'locked' versions of the Hitachi 4 gig card, allowing you to 'salvage' the 5 gig microdrive that came with it.
However, you need to be aware that Seagate disabled the later versions of their embedded ST1 drives just as Hitachi did (Thanks guys, I'll remember that next time I'm looking for a hard drive). Anyway. the rummor is that any of the Rio players with serial #'s LOWER than 45xxxxxxxxxx have the unlocked ST1 which can be used in just about anything. Serial #'s higher than that have the same issues as the later generation MuVo2's

OK, Success
I have confirmed that the older Rio Carbon WILL WORK with a 'locked' microdrive from an MP3 player (either the Hitachi or Seagate cards) I purchased a used one from e-bay with a serial # 364xxxxxxxxx. The CF microdrive card from that player did not have any firmware code indicated on the back label and it works perfectly in my HP2215. Also, Both the Hitachi 4gig OEM white label card and the firmwear locked ST1 5 gig card I have (which were useless in anything else) could be recognized by the Rio. It's a rather involved hack and it requires that you confirm the serial # on the player BEFORE you buy it but it DOES work and its the only solution I have found for these disabled OEM microdrives. Hope this helps someone P.S. I have heard that the Rio Carbons up to serial # 44xxxxxxxxxx have the unlocked ST1's but I have only personally confirmed up to the serial # on my player.
