Corrupted SD Card?
Hi,
I recently got an iPAQ 1940 and a 1GB SanDisk SD Card. My problem is when I take out the SD card and put it in my card reader, the files and directories are replaced or are displayed as random characters. The reason I am using a card reader is it is much faster to copy files than ActiveSync. I once tried to format it but the format comes up with an error and does not complete. I do not have any problems using the card with the iPAQ so is the problem with the card reader? Thanks in advance.

- Can you try another card reader (a friends possibly )- What PC operating system are you using? - What did you try to format the card as Fat16. Fat32 or NTFS? - Does your card reader read other cards okay? - Have you tried plugging your card into another USB slot on your PC?

I tried using the card with my Pentax Optio camera and there are no problems reading it. I am using WinXP. I'm not sure what format the card was formatted as I started to use it right out of the box. My card reader does not have problems reading a 128MB and a 512MB Card. What I did tried was to use a friend's 1GB SD card (different brand) but had the same symptoms (funny characters in filenames and directories). Also tried plugging the card reader and the card to different ports but still the same problem.

this is a common problem with the Sandisk SD cards and has been talked about else where on the net. i can't remember exactly where, but your problem is not uncommon. most places if i remember mentioned that the card will need to be reformatted to fix the problem, but it will return again.

I got a 1GB Sandisk SD too, thinking it's a good brand since it's got the SD in its name. Prices for Sandisk seem to be higher than the other brands though so I figured there must be a reason for it. So it's not a good SD brand?

Yesterday several files on my 1 GB Sandisk SD card started getting corrupted after 3 weeks of use. I lost some documents, photos, and video clips. At one point my iPAQ 4150 didn't even know it had a storage card inserted when i used the file explorer! I had to do a reset. I have sent an email to sandisk support regarding this issue, and also asked if i can exchange mine for one made in Japan (as suggested by others). Mine is made in China.

Sometimes it just happens - but doing the above normally fixes it. Also it is not always the cards fault there are times that we close our units or do a soft reset in the middle of the card being written to - no wonder we get card errors - the same would happen on your PC ![]()
