How can I make use of a 5gb microdrived ripped from an mp3 player?

It was recovered from my broken mp3 player. I dont have a CF type 2 card reader but if I am assured it can be made to work, I will go out and buy one.

I am hoping a reformat would get it to work. Any tips?

I'm not sure if it will work, but, a CF and SD card reader is a handy device to have anyway. They're not all that expensive ($10).

What MP3 player was it ripped from? Some players, like the ipod (unsurprisingly) have a "feature" where if the disk is pulled and attached to a reader it will play dead and apper as if the disk is physically damaged.

It was taken out of a rio carbon.

I do have a CF/SD card reader. But the CF card portion of it reads type 1 only. That microdrive being CF type 2 wont fit in my present card reader.

I'd let you borrow mine, but I doubt we live anywhere near each other. I still say $10 isn't a bad investment.

Was the micro drive CF2 or was it Mini IDE, they are the same form factor, but they will not interchange. I tried doing the same thing with on of my drives, it would never work correctly. Turns out that even though they are the same size with the same connector, the pin outs are different.

If its just a cf microdrive inside, what prevents you from not being able to get a bigger regular cf card and putting that inside to upgrade the player, and save battery life vs a microdrive.

Or wouldnt the player read a regular cf card.

Actually, this _might_ just work. I have heard of people ripping the MD out of rio players before. Not sure if it will work with the carbon though.

You should really think about getting a T2 CF reader. They are handy.

what ,if any, are the part numbers for this microdrive? what colour is the casing/sticker on it ? there have been numerous threads about MP3 drive being sold on ebay and then not working in a PDA. seagate make drives for both MP3 and PDA/cameras but they have different firmware on them and are nor interchangable. if you see any numbers on the drive "google" them see what comes up.....

i bought a seagate 4 gig microdrive from ebay in aust. but i knew it was the right one. it has a predominantly orange cover with the top left corner being blue. i scored it for about $30 aud about $27usd now... i remember the mp3 versions were red/yellow colouring.

I finally got a CF type 2 card reader. Formatted my microdrive, and it worked like any other CF cards. Thanks people for your responses

yeah for you, well done.... now to look for broken rio carbons on ebay...lol
