32 GB and 64 GB Compact Flash Cards

Time to throw your Ipods to the trash can.

Here you can find 32GB CF cards at a good price.

Newegg.com - A-DATA 32GB Compact Flash (CF) Flash Card Model SPEEDY CF 32G - Retail

I will be waiting for the 64 GB card, which is promissed for this spring. Let me know if it comes out before that.

the question is: how XP/Vista handle them
except MS release update to unlock FAT32 32GB border, these cards may not be usable

Is there a gb limit that the windows mobile os has. If xp has a limit, then wm must, and youd think it would be lower.

Aw man, looks nice. I wonder if they have a "fixed-disk" version or if the ROM id is flashable? It would be a great embedded (diskless) computer fixed-disk.

Two reviewers with X51's (one with WM5, one with WM6 football ROM) say it works fine.

FAT 32 does not havea 32g limit.. the formating prog does. there are ways to do it ...this is from wikipedia

File Allocation Table - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

heres a small extract

"Windows 2000 and Windows XP can read and write to FAT32 file systems of any size, but the format program included in Windows 2000 and higher can only create FAT32 file systems of 32 GB or less. This limitation is by design[6] and was imposed because many tasks on a very large FAT32 file system become slow and inefficient.[10] The limitation can be bypassed with third-party formatting utilities."

and this
"Microsoft decided to implement a newer generation of FAT, known as FAT32, with cluster counts held in a 32-bit field, of which 28 bits are used to hold the cluster number, for a maximum of approximately 250 million (228) clusters. This would allow for drive sizes of up to 8 terabytes with 32K clusters, but the boot sector uses a 32 bit field for the sector count, limiting volume size to 2TB on a hard disk with 512 byte sectors."

CompactFlash Frequently Asked Questions

an excerpt...... "CF cards are available in capacities from 16MB to 12GB. The CF Specification can support capacities up to 137GB."

So after the 64gb one comes out, to follow the pattern of doubling the memory, we will probably see a 128gb one in a few yrs.

Aximsitex50icon Read the reviews

On the Newegg website there are two guys who give good reviews about this card, and both have Axims.

I'm waiting for the price to drop a little bit more. I just remember when I bought my first 256Mb card for $35 about 3 years ago and last month I just bought a 2Gb for $13. Prices will go down fast. :)

For those who are asking about hard disks made out of compact flash cards read this article:

Is there any information about upcoming large capacity Type II CF cards? I have this 32GB Adata Speedy CF card, and it was a nice upgrade to the system, but my X50v has a Type II CF slot, and this 32GB card is the thinner Type I which leaves a gap collecting dust. From the looks of the picture posted above, the 64GB card could be the thicker Type II kind. It should also be easier (cheaper) to cram 64GB or 128GB into the thicker Type II form factor. Hmm...

CF Type I/II specifies the form factor only and has nothing to do with flash vs hard drive.

Good idea, I'll start that project right after I finished the nice case I'm building from duct tape and card board right now.

My point was, it would be easily technically feasible (and have added benefits for the Axim) to double the storage capacity by using the CF Type II form factor.

Prices dropping yeahh!

Just as I said, the price of this card has dropped $22 since we started this thread. This is nearly $10 a week.

If competitors start to sell their cards, soon we will have an affordable 32GB card. Let's say $50.
