I created a new folder on my desktop, did a drag & drop of the files the from the card via card reader & then formatted the card. Then I did a drag & drop back to the card.
Perhaps there's a faster way, but this worked for me!
good call wendy .. thats the simplest and fastest way.
you could do it on the device by copying the files to a CF card but the transfer rate would be much slower.

I don't know if I was specific enough about this.I don't just want to safeguard my data, I want all the software previously installed on the older fat16 SD card to work again normally on the new formatted SD card.
I don't just want to move data around, I want to save my self having to install, register and setting more than 400 meg of installed program again.
But I would like to try the drag and drop method.I just hope you clearly understand my questions for a more accurate answer.
You should be fine as long as the folder structure is the same. Flash cards are not like hard drives in that respect.

yes fat 16 fat32 wont make a difference. as long as you do a direct copy of the data. make a folder called SDcard somewhere you know then copy the whole card into it. as long as the folder names and locations are the same you wont have to reinstall the progs. i have done this several times upgrading SD and CF cards...

I've done this when I've gone from 512Mb to 1Gb to 2Gb SD cards and had no problems. Copy everything off - then copy it back after you've formatted the card.
