Memory Card Renamed - Help!

Hi All,

I'm having what seems to be an old problem, but with a twist....
In setting up a new X51v, I decided to modify some of the settings, including moving email attachments to the SD Card within Pocket Outlook and modifying
the width of scroll bars with Tweaks2K2 (which I previously used on my X5) amoung a few of the "tweaks."
It wasn't until I used Tweaks2K2 to set attachments to the storage card (yes, attachments to storage card was set in 2 different locations or at 2 different times, both in Tweaks2K2 and pOutlook) that problems occurred, with the SD Card being renamed to SD Card2. Most, if not all, of my programs are installed to the SD Card including (parts of?) tdlaunch and pocketweather. Of course, now things aren't working (correctly), in particular, icons for both programs have disappeared with the arrival of SD Card2.
I've checked the forums here and found 3 threads that relate, with fixes, but to no avail. I've removed the card and when I do, SD Card2 disappears leaving only SD Card. There is only one folder on SD Card: Inbox, which is empty. I have unchecked the box placing attachments on the storage card in pOutlook and reversed the tweaks performed with Tweaks2K2. After deleting the SD Card folder with the card out, I soft reset and SD Card comes back with the Inbox folder on it. If I do not soft reset and replace the card after deleting the false SD Card folder, SD Card returns with all the programs on it as the only active card, correctly named and the icons reappear on the today screen. With only this SD Card folder in file explorer (the original and correct one), I soft reset but both folders return SD Card and SD Card2, (with SD Card2 as the active folder and SD Card has the one Inbox folder on it) and then the icons disappear again. That has been the extent of suggestions I have seen so far, with the exception of some registery tweaks that I could perform with regedit, but I did not really see the relativity.
There is obviously still something trying to access the Inbox on the SD Card before the unit has a chance to recognize the card, but I'm at a loss as to where to look to fix it.

I'm on an Axim X51v running WM2005 - could anyone please help?

It sounds like the OS is attempting to access the attachments directory on the SD card before the .dll is loaded into memory. So it recreates a directory with the name it's looking for in the first place. Shortly thereafter the SD .dll has completed loading and since you can't have to directories with the same name it's assigned a #2.

The samething happens to me with Wisbar Advance if I remove the CF card then soft-reset. Since the skin files are stored on the card Wisbar Advance 3 recreates the directory automatically. Then when the real CF card is inserted it's recognized as #2.

A possible solution would be to remove the outlook ".lnk" from your startup folder or even better cut/paste it to my documents.

WARNING: This will probably prevent Outlook from automatically checking for new email. I am not sure I know that is how Flexmail works; it must be running inorder to check for new email it doesn't rely on notifications to wake it at prescribed intervals.

That suggestion worked!
Yet you and I know that it will have other consequences (ie: Outlook will not automatically look for new mail...) So, I will eventually want to move Outlook back to the startup folder. Question is, what got changed originally? Or probably more important, what did not get changed back when all the "tweaks" were reversed? How to track this down without doing a hard set and having to configure the unit all over again? Any ideas?
Thanks Again!

yes you need to get a registry editor. i use "mobile registry editor" this actually runs on your desk pc and reads the registry of the PDA via AS. i find it better when deep down that i can see all the registry key...

i had done this once to my ipaq too what you have is a registry key that is referencing SD2... search for it and remove the 2... i thought i was setting something to the SD card but somehow i made a mistake and ended up with a SD folder in main mem or windows cant remember......i could delete it but as you said a soft reset and it was back.... keep searching especially for posts by menneisyys

I tried to find where the reg. key referring to email attachment storage and I couldn't. I don't know what to look for.
If you have a Spite/Spb backup pre-dating storage card hack you should be ok. Otherwise a hard-reset maybe necessary.

Sorry I couldn't be more help. Maybe you could try emailing the developer of tweaks2k2 or try sending him a PM I believe he's registered on this board he undoubtedly knowns the reg. key you need.

Speedy - Developer said (or has not said) what the reg key is that gets changed (he was uncertain...) but Spud42's post reminded me that I have seen and applied a similar key rename fix around here and I believe it was by Menneisyys. I haven't found it yet - if anyone can post a link to the thread I'd really appreciate it!!!!!

here is one that might help

http://www.aximsite.com/boards/tips-...rage-card.html

it has links to screenshots... i think the problem i had was i forgot the "\" at the start so it made a folder called "SD" not pointing to the actual SD card..

Spud-ster!!!

That was it.... I was sure I had seen that thread before - used it when the same thing happened to me on an X5.

I'm concerned about what Menneisyys calls "lengthy filesys.exe compactions" - off the top of your head, do you know what the symptoms of this would be?

I'm assuming slowed processing time...

Reason I ask: All sorts of undesirables have begun happening.....
1) Clock has reset itself to 12:00am
2) Unit is running reaaaal slow at times
3) Power is being consumed at an abnormally increased rate
4) A number of programs mistakenly flash notifications that my "trial period has expired" when I know they are bought and paid for. I chalk this up to something with the clock reset registering a time and date that would cause notifications. It seems to go away after setting the correct time and date.... But I don't know why it did it in the first place?
5) SD Card2 has returned even after applying the fix suggested by Speedy and Menneisyys, removing outlook.lnk from the Startup folder and Today screen plug-in. BTW, it remains "removed" from both locations and all this still began happening at the same time...

I noticed in tdLaunch under options, a choice of processor speeds that I have never used before which was set by default on 100/50MHz, checked what mine was operating at and it turned out to be 104MHz. Tried selecting all the options allowed, up to 400/200MHz but the SD Card is still not recognized upon start up (and SD Card & SD Card2 reappear).

So if it isn't a fixable thing of either increasing speed to recognize the SD Card at start-up or eliminating the program "call" or data recognition needed from the SD Card upon boot, I don't know what to pursue. I am at a bit of a loss as to where to go from here.

Any Suggestions?

Thanks!

ok this may seem drastic but it was the only way i fixed a bluetooth problem after a hard reset that i had. BT worked at Hard reset but after restore it died ...
even not restoring and reinstalling everything i still had a few probs. so...

i reflashed the rom with the same os level it already was. i think the ipaq was 1.10 so i did a rom "upgrade" to the same rom cured everything. backups were no good as they were recognised as from a different device . so i had to abandon them and start from scratch..... but it cured everything... the ultimate hard reset.... cause it even cleared the ipaq filestore...etc.. so if you do this copy anything you need off the PDA first !!!!!!

I've been entertaining the thought of a hard reset and reinstalling...
...but I figure if it has come to that, I might as well continue playing with the registery first. While the "SD Card2" is present, I'll do a search (if I can do that with Regedit) for what ever there is in the registry and consider changes. I'll save the ROM Flash for the ultimate back-up plan. However, what I'd reeeeally like to find out is what slowed the unit down from recognizing the card at start up in the first place? Some sort of conflict there. So how would I go about finding out what is being loaded when I boot up? Kinda like pressing the F8 key or something like that....

This all started happening when I tweaked with Tweaks2K2 - - And the today-screen-icon-disappearing-SD Card2 appearing-trick is a known bug (but I got it worked out on my Axim X5, WM2003...) not here however...
I did a registry search as well for SD Card2, but nothing was found!!!
Hard reset huh.....
I feel like I'm giving up when I do that but.....

Increadably.....

I took a second look at Menneisyys's thread mentioned above and one suggestion was: after a registry modification on WM5 devices, to literally wait a "minute" for changes to be written to the registry. He says:

Quote:
Soft reset your device after the registery hack!

You will also need to soft reset your Pocket PC so that Messaging (Pocket Inbox) also sees the changes – ActiveSync will see them at once, but Messaging won’t).

Note that on WM5 devices you will need to suspend (press the Power button shortly) before resetting. (For geeks, the explanation of the reasons for this can be found here.)

The thing that peeked my interest the explaination for the "need to suspend" before soft resetting, which I was not doing in my haste. Now I haven't found suspend on my X51v, but by waiting a minute you can see the screen flicker as the changes are apparently updated in the registery.

As far as I can tell, all is functioning normally at this point. Well, except for having an Outlook link in my Today Screen Launcher (tdLaunch). From what I read here, it is not something I absolutely need, so I'm not anxious to go sticking it back in there. But I have this nagging little feeling to give it a try, just to report what happens here.... ....um, see my quote

Hope this helps others!

Oh brother, it's back.......

Not even the Menneisyys suggestion helps consistantly now!
Sometimes the unit can be soft reset and the actual SD Card will be the only one there. Other (most) times it still registers SD Card and SD Card2.
The activity seems to have resumed after I got an error trying to start MasterSoft SuDoku (v.1) - screen hung on the error notification window and had to perform a soft reset to get out of it. Since then, SuDoku doesn't work and the dreaded SD Card2 has returned with all the maladies described in my first post.

Any ideas what is happening?
Short of a hard reset and start again - any other suggestions?

Thanks!

sounds like the fix only works when you turn on/off. when you do a soft reset it seems to read some file and reapply the un needed SD card 2

if you cant find it in the registry then a hard reset will wipe everything and re load all software from the roms. this will absolutly fix your problem but with the pain of setting it all up again. a restore from a backup is lilable to reinstall the problem. unless you have a backup from before you tried tweaks...that might save some pain. but a clean hard reset will also clear out all the un-neccessary files left from software installed and deleted. a lot of stuff gets left behind..........
