How much difference does card speed make?

Does card speed refer to the speed in which it reads, writes, or both? If I am going to run games, apps, and movies, and music from my sd card would an 8x one be too slow? Thanks.

usually it is the write speed. you won't see the difference when using the card on your axim. you will see the difference when writing new info to it in a card reader or a digital camera.

Oh, thanks. I don't care at all about write speed than, and would gladly get a slower card if it meant forking out less $$$. Thanks again.
