512mb = 483.56 Mb????

May be a dumb question but why is my 512 MB Sandisk SD card only have 482.56 MB as total available space? What happened to almost 30 MB?

Manufacturer: 1MB = 1,000,000 bytes
Computer: 1KB =1024 bytes, 1MB = 1KB x 1KB = 1,048,576 bytes
512,000,000/1,048,576= 488.28125

What Ike said, and it's not much different for standard PC harddrives.. they come quite a bit closer - but still "not" exactly as advertised.

But imagine trying to put 486.xxxx on the front of those tiny cards

Dont forget too that SD cards reserve a section for the "secure" aspect of the card...that also takes away from the total amount of memory.
