which CF? capacity or speed?

which CF card would you buy?
sandisk 2gb ultraii for 170 dollars or,
sandisk 2gb for 120 dollars..

i mean is it worth giving 50 dollars more for ultraii?
is it a must to have a 9/10mb per sec read/write speed to watch dvd rips in x50v for example?

anyone tried that with a slow CF card?

i am about to order a 2gb card, so please help

I dont know the speed differences between the two - but if its even a bit faster, its worth the improvement.

In general, people have reported the CF slot being pretty slow. In all honesty, I'd prefer to tell you to spend $71 and get a 1GB SD 60x card. Fastest SD card out there, and much faster than CF.

I loaded 700 of my photos (640x480, a total of 37 MB) onto a 64MB SD card for viewing on my Axim x50v. When I went to Pictures, and told it to look at the SD card, it took about a minute and a half to bring up the thumbnails. As an experiment, I put the same photos on my 1 GB CF card (normal speed, not a high speed one) and Pictures only took 15 seconds to bring up the thumbnails. Thus it seems CF is faster than SD.

The added speed will likely not affect its performance in your axim dramatically - unless you do things like vermontcathy, which require lots of reading at a time.

I haven't played DVD rips on my axim, but I have the played [high quality] anime fansubs I watch in my desktop with my 4GB CF II card (it's a Hitachi Microdrive). Each of these episodes is about 160MB per 20 minutes, so it's pretty heavy duty stuff, and I've only had problems because: 1) My axim got really hot, so the processor slowed down considerably so it caused skipping, video and audio out of sync, & buffer underruns. This was after 3 or 4 hours watching anime, though; 2) Before I upgraded to the latest Betaplayer release. So you should have no trouble with regular DVD viewing using a "regular" card, if you encode good sized files and have a nice sized buffer (there are threads on how to do this elsewhere).

HOWEVER, if you're planning on adding/deleting big files, like movies, _constantly_ then you might want to get the faster card because it'll save you time in the long run.

My 4GB Microdrive works fine for my needs. It ranked in the middle of the pack with a bunch of other cards in a digital camera review at about 4MBs, although it's supposed to be able to reach up to 7MBs (according to Hitachi). I don't know how that ranks in flash memory speed (as in 40x, etc.?), but I find it works slower than burning a CD at 8x or 6x (in CD-R writing speed).

That works fine for me since I use most of the space for mp3s, which I won't change often. It takes about 20 minutes to transfer 1GB from my computer to my microdrive (through a card reader), so that is a bit slow, but I transfer much less than 1GB on a regular basis. You just have to think about how you're going to use it and whether you really need the speed for yourself, as a matter of convenience, because your axim will be fine with a standard card - you don't need the extra speed, it's just convenient (unless you actually need it for some time-sensitive application or something...)

Uhm, I think I kinda went off on a rant/tangent near the end, but I hope it helps,

-D

Just ordered my x50v and like everyone else have been looking high and low for some definitive info on which SD card to buy. Newegg Kingmax is just too difficult to resist but could not swallow ALL glowing reviews at the NewEgg site. Hours of scouring Google and found a unbiased review of 3 SD cards...

Link - http://gregkeene.typepad.com/h6315/2...leading_s.html

Compares Ultra II, KingMax and Panasonic...very interesting...

Though it still leaves me debating between KingMax and Ultra II. Does anyone know of any popular PPC app which will do a lot of writes on the card??? Like GPS, Multimedia, VoIP etc... If no, then Kingmax is a great deal....if yes, then the extra $$ spent on Ultra II would make is worthwhile....

Comments....

shouldn't, say, a 60x CF card be the same speed as a 60x SD card?

comparing the speed of different speed CF and SD cards is apples and oranges for sure.

For some reason it is hard to find any Sandisk Ultra II SD's for sale anywhere. They are not even listed on the Sandisk site.

I did find a listing at E-Cost though. Anyone have any buying experience with them?

I've bought from e-cost multiple time and all has gone well. They have lots of good deals and rebates. Note that although they say Free Shipping on orders > $25, they still charge a $4 "handling" fee.
