SD write-protect latch position works both ways?

I have a 1 Gb SD card. It has that little latch thing on the side, that can be used to make it write protected.

I have an external USB 2 card reader. When the latch is in the open position (according to the card), it can be written to. When it's in the locked position, I can't write on it. Works as expected.

I recently got a new notebook, which also includes a card reader. However, when I use this built in reader, the latch works the opposite way. Meaning when it supposed to be locked, it's not, and when it's not supposed to be locked, it is.

Is this intentional? Is this how it should work? Because basically, now there is no real write protected setting for that latch!

Thanks
