Export data from old card to new

I have a 256mb CF card which I've installed dozens of games & apps onto it.

Say I get a new 1GB CF card, can I just copy the data/apps from the 256 card over to the new 1GB card and everything will still work?

Also, I assume that if I instead get a SD card, I cannot just copy the data/apps over to it, I would have to reinstall them? Is there any way to export the CF data to SD without reinstalling apps?

Also, I read some other posts regarding battery drain from the CF microdrives. Is this true? Is the battery drain only a problem with the microdrives and not regular CF flash cards?

I miss the battery longevity I got from my Palm's, so anything to avoid addtl power loss (microdrive) is what I'm after.

Thanks!

And Love this site! Thought moving over to PPC I would miss out on the helpful community I was part of at 1Src.com. But Aximsite is even better!

As stated above, yes you can just copy and paste it.

If you copy and paste to a SD card then you will need to create new shortcuts to all the apps.

Since microdrives have moving parts they do use more power. Though not as much as some may elude to. The increased storage is well worth it to most. Besides, it doesn't hurt to have a spare battery. You can get a good deal on both a spare battery and microdrive off ebay. Just stick with retail box for microdrive.

Yes, some of the Palms to offer longer battery life. But, with increased graphics, faster processing, and more capabilites, something has to be given up until battery technology improves.

I use Ice Mirror (freeware) from Ice Graphics, just select the master directory and the mirror and do a full mirror - it works I have mirrored 512mb cards onto 1gb with no issues.

The easiest and quickest way to do this is to use a card reader.

Simply copy your 256 GB card to your Desktop and then copy the copy back to your 1 GB card. Everything will work perfectly - including the shortcuts.

That's true if moving data between cards of the same format, but one of the questions regarded CF to SD card transfer, in which case reinstallation or at least complete modification of the shortcuts will be necessary. Alastair's advice sounds good to me; of course if both cards are CF then a card reader is the simplest route.
