TabletPC Software

Just thought I'd get some discussions going on TabletPC-specific software that's available now. Quite a selection over a couple years ago.

Here's a link to one site that has listings/links to a great deal of SW, some freeware, some not.

I really want to get a tablet PC but there aren't any I really like, they are too much money, and I need a new PDA/phone device. Arhwell, I may get one, one day.
My "My PDA" now updated with hints and tips including a ROM fix for the RX3700 series and installing Transport Tycoon onto your PDA.

Here's a link to a new piece of SW that is quite cool. I've been beta-testing it for a couple months. It has features that MS should really have included in Word when on a TPC. Great editing functions via pen.

Check out the video's on the usage. This is what pen computing should be like.

I recently bought the New version of MyScript Notes from Vision Objects that recognizes and converts handwritten contents and I must admit I was very impressed

It is available as a trial version at www.visionobjects.com.

Enjoy!

That MyScript Notes looks like an interesting text conversion app.

I like the way it shows the ink and the converted text side-by-side. Quite handy if you work in landscape mode a lot.

For the most part nowadays I don't convert handwritten notes to text anymore. I use OneNote for notes related to projects. I like how I can drag in web content, multimedia content, heck... just about anything into OneNote notes.

Then I use Journal for quick meeting notes that I have to "flesh out" before sending out to others. MyScript Notes would work well for this if I made complete (and legible... :-) ) notes since the conversion looks to take the formatting quite completely.

I am trying to hold out for a while to see what's about to hit the market later this fall with the new processors, but I really want a slate tablet and all this talk about handwrtting recognition and OneNote just gets my blood going - if you know what I mean...

To be honest, I don't know if waiting for more Duo Core processor units is worthwhile if you're looking at small to medium size Slates.

Do you really need that kind of power? Do you plan on running that many processor intensive apps simultaneously on a Slate?

Remember that a Centrino M processor benchmarks about 50% higher than a P4 based on GHz ratings, so my 1.2 runs roughly equivalent to a 1.8 GHz P4. That's more than fast enough for most people.

What kind of apps are you looking at running? If it's what most Tableteers run then the current Centrino equipped units should be more than sufficient.

Those are all good points.

None of my reasons are really rational ones. For the LS800, I was hoping something might make it run a little less hot... or provide a little better battery life. For tablets in general, I was hoping the rush of new processors would cause a drop in price in some of the exisiting models/specs.

Some prices are dropping, but those are all convertible models. They are getting down to only $100 - $200 more than their Notebook counterparts. This is, of course, because they're entirely based on the same Notebook components. But it means a heavier, bulkier machine.

The prices of the sub-notebook style convertibles (like the P1510) and Slates are still higher and will remain so. They are made in smaller production numbers and require more miniturization and/or 'squishing' the little bits into a smaller space.

Slates will always be more than Convertibles, regrettably.

You might want to look at the Refurbished market. You get a 'like-new' machine with warranty that has probably had a more thorough testing than the original device. You can save yourself usually $200+ on a refurb.
