I have an Axim X5... Can I save my Themes to my SD Card and just run/load them from there? I wanna save the space on the device, but I also don't wanna have to sync 10 times a day and copy over a theme at a time... :(
Store the ones you have collected on the card, but the one you use keep in main memory

You can run them from your SD card, but you'll need something to do that, the OS won't.
I use ThemeKing, search around I think there is a free one somewhere that does this.
But if themes are used for Today background, then themes can be stored in 'My Documents' in SD or CF card (Just make a new folder and named it 'My Documents'). Make sure that you deleted 'ignore_my_docs' in SD or CF (wherever you choose to have 'My Documents' located); Store themes in 'My Documents' and OS then will recognized the themes and they will show up in Today selection.

Reason: Forgot to add that themes to be stored in My Documents in either SD or CF card

I was going to post the same thing. I run themes from my storage cards on my IPAQs all the time.

You can safely store all your themes on a storage card. When you apply the theme (*.tsk) the OS extracts the needed files (tdywater.gif & stwater.gif) to the \Windows\ directory anyways.
make sure that you are talking about the same thing... themes and skins aren't the same thing and most today items react poorly when their resources are on a card and the card is removed

Well, yeah, that's true. If the card is removed, then the pocket pc may lock up, but my SD card is pretty much a permanent fixture in my pocket pc, so it's really not that big a deal to me.
Also, a couple of years ago, I really played around quite a lot with themes and was always changing the theme on my Start page. Now, I just have a very generic theme and don't really change my themes much, so, for me anyway, having a bunch of accessible themes is not important to me any more.

Yes, that's right. When card is taken out, the theme will still be on the background, naturally the selection won't be shown on Today picks.
If you change SD or CF card often, then it would be best to keep themes on OS.
I keep all programs, like Resco File Folder, Sprite Backup, eWallet, etc. on SD card so SD card stays in all the time so keeping themes in SD works best for me.
