What app are you using to generate the themes?
What Axim model do you have? What rom version are you using for that Ax?
What is the orginal size if the images you are using?

Axim x50v - WM 03SE - using the MS Theme generator v2.

sorry - I have also played around with various image sizes, from <240 and larger...doesn't seem to change much

I dunno if MS ThemeGenerator 2 can directly handle creating anything other than 240x320 QVGA themes. You probably need at least SPB's Extended ThemeGenerator add-on if not some other app that can handle true VGA themes.

Lol are you sure your not selecting "TILE" in the theme generator?

Are you using another app to load the themes Like ThemeMaster? I noticed that if I load a theme using ThemeMaster it ends up tiled. If I Go to Start|Settings|Today and load the same theme it isn't tiled.
