You have to do the max resoltion as a square. For example, if it's 480x640, then you need to make it 640x640 for Landscape use as well.

I personally like ThemeMaker SE (link in MyPDA). You're actually pretty limited in what you can do with themes themselves, which is why some of the today screen plug-ins are quite popular. For example, you can't change the color of the "speaker" icon in the menu bar. I have no idea why, but even contacted a couple of the theme-making software companies to ask about it.

So, I KISS it (Keep it simple...). Try not to choose a background that will keep you from reading the screen. Choose colors that compliment that background.

OH...and the software packages actually give you a gradient option for either your main screen or the taskbar menu. You don't have to do that yourself.
