software recomendations needed please
I want software that can change the desktop on my pda dell axim 51v to be able to click an icon and your software program opens up.
I do not want a phone or contacts link at all on the desktop.
why do I need a phone or contacts link if this is not a phone?
maybe if I had an iphone like the husband and his wife who sat next to me in the plane who each had one.
All the software screens I have seen have this on it and I do not need nor want it there.
I want to have visable links like on a windows desktop, and that is all.
Is there such a thing out there? Or is this an obsolete feature for a pda now?
Or
Would it be better to just get that program where you click start and then it opens up like all programs on the windows desktop instead of links on the desktop?
I think it is called wisbar advanced 3.
Would this save on battery usage if I got this instead?
I think I read somewhere here on this site that desktop links take up more battery power, can anyone confirm this for me, please?
much thanks for any help provided.

A program like iLauncher from SHSH can be configured to place a series of program icons on your main screen--pretty much fill it up, I would think. It can also be used to change the programs listed on the bottom tab--I have Calendar and Dictionary as my choices. There are other options from companies like SPB that have similar functionality. I don't know about battery power--I would guess that running fewer programs on the today screen would help with battery power, but it would be a small degree, I would think. Screen brightness and wi-fi seem to be the big drains on battery in my axim.

I have several of the programs that can place icons on the screen and am currently using two of them. I am running UltimateLaunch and iLauncher and have PocketPlus available to be installed should I decide to use it again. There are a few more options out there that I do not use.
This is what my Today screen(s) look like currently.

Thank You hstn
The iLauncher seems to be the one that will help me do what I want my 51v to do. :approve:
You said It can also be used to change the programs listed on the bottom tab--I have Calendar and Dictionary as my choices.
My question to you is How can you change the links on the bottom?
about battery drain
so do not have to worry about drainage then
The brightness is set to least bright and wifi is always off unless you manually go into wifi and click the turn on button to turn it on.
Thank You AKAJohnDoe

How did you get those icons onto the bottom of your screen?
I will check out UltimateLaunch also AKAJohnDoe.
Thank you for the link to your screen page and web site.
Any detailed info like what is on your page is always helpful and appreciated.
I like to see shots and get info so that I can figure out what is possible to do and how it will look.
Thank You again to both of you.
Your info and help is much appreciated.

If you're looking for software for your PDA then you always have SourceForge.Net. Have you tried searching for programs there? ( sourceforge.net/softwaremap/trove_list.php?form_cat=688 )
Had to remove the beginning of the web address in the beginning because of user restriction limitations.

Great screen shot and description, AKAJohnDoe.
If you like iLauncher, Barrow, you've probably seen that you can run it on a trial basis by downloading it from SBSH. Note, too, that MobilitySite members have access to discounts that several vendors have generously supplied to the site. Check http://www.mobilitysite.com/boards/m...e-members.html
If you are using iLauncher and you want to place icons in the shell tray tab (the line second from the bottom as in AKAJohnDoe's screenshot [although do note that he has another program and some very nice added icons in his system], follow these steps: in iLauncher, go to Options > Shortcuts > *Shell Tray Tab* > Add and then select the program (usually an *.exe file found by navigating your program files using the Common File Locations box at the top of this options page.
To change the two tab options at the very bottom of your screen, in iLauncher, follow:
Options > Shortcuts > *Left Softkey Tab* or *Right Softkey Tab* and make your selection from the programs you want.
If you're exploring, you can look at Gigi's wonderful What can I do with my axim? tutorial http://www.mobilitysite.com/boards/v...o-with-my-axim
If you like the SBSH iLauncher, you can check our their forums where they have discussions of programs and their uses, including several screenshots of members' configurations that get quite creative. I've never gotten to that point, keeping my screen simple with just PocketBreeze, Pocket Weather, and iLauncher running; I'm not savvy enough to figure out how to get a beautiful today screen like AKAJohnDoe has. Do check out the many options, if you are interested--there are some wonderful programs; the tutorial and the View MY PDA pages on this site are very helpful (some of the veterans here have done some brilliant and helpful work in explaining what programs they use and how they have configured their screens.

The screen shot I posted back in post #3 does not have the shell tray configured; this is iLauncher with the tabs on the bottom.
The top tabs are UltimateLaunch tabs. UltimateLaunch can run other today plug-ins under itself (in tabs); the screenshot in the third post of this thread shows iLauncher running under UltimateLaunch. UltimateLaunch does have a very annoying problem, though: On the X51V (and some square screen devices, or so I have read), it does not scroll in the options setting screens, so it is impossible to set, or even see, some of the options. But, if you are willing to put up with the word "unregistered" watermarked in all four corners of your screen, UltimateLaunch will run for free forever. I bought it to make that go away.
And, yes, I have located some nice icons here and there and even created some myself. Most of the icons, though, are not of my own creation, and did not come packaged with any program, either. UltimateLaunch uses standard .ico files and iLauncher uses standard .png files.
Here are a number of screenshots of various configurations I have had or have. You can kind of infer what the configuration of each image is by the folder path and name of the jpg.
Here is a screenshot showing the second UltimateLaunch tab invoked. This tab has icons to invoke PocketInformant (Tasks, Agenda, Contacts and "new" of each, below).

Oops, I see it now. Thanks for the corrections; hopefully I haven't passed along any more misinformation to Barrow.
AKAJohnDoe, is the combination of clock and date in the upper right an option in iLauncher? I like that feature (along with many other elements of your screens) (by the way, I've appreciated your voice of reason in the SBSH forums, too)

The Date/Time is a registry tweak that was most likely made on my PPC via Tweaks2k2.net, although I seem to recall it being there in other products, too (SKTools, perhaps?). And, of course, if one really wants to take the time to search them down, the registry tweak itself is probably described somewhere on the web.
I did run the shell tray in iLauncher for a long time, though, only recently undoing it for a cleaner approach and look.
Sometimes I just get the urge to change things around, you know? ;)

khelben1979 Thanks for the useful reminder.
completely forgot to check there for pda software.
hstn and AKAJohnDoe
shelltab is the next to bottom area on the screen which has battery switch icon, wifi and bluetooth on it, right?
If it gets changed do I lose the links to these 3 programs or do they stay there when I add something to it?
I do not want to lose them because I do not know how to put them back.
Same with left and right softkey, also. Left is calender and right is contacts very bottom of the screen.
If I just take iLauncher out it all converts back to normal, right?
I like the ilauncher top area so I will not need ultimate I think. iLauncher works quite well for what I want.
my screen on the computer changes from once a month to 3 times a day.
Right now it looks broken because of the background. Glass in screen has cracks in it.
Talk about freaking people out when they walk by.
more questions below
how about a firewall and virus checker or eraser for a pda. Are they useful or not needed?
I like using the free wifi at places that have it so when I use my pda and go on the internet I want to know if I will need this.
I knew if I asked here I would get good ideas and a lot of help. :approve:
thanks to all 3 of you for more useful information and sites to check on.

Yes

They stay, although you are limited to some number of icons that can be placed down there. It is a physical space limitation for the icons themselves.

You probably want to set the softkeys to whatever you want them to be before removing the thing that enables you to change them

That's cool. It is your device.

Nope. But you might want a means to store encrypted data.

You might consider a backup program for your pda, if you don't have one already--something like Sprite's, SPB backup, or Resco backup. If you back up consistently, you have a file for restoring your programs and files if something should go wrong and you have to hard reset your pda.

Absolutely.
I run both Sprite Backup and Spb Backup.
Sprite backs up automatically at 3AM daily on a schedule to the SD card and Spb backs up automatically at 4AM daily on a schedule to the CF card. I keep 3 days worth of backups from each product. The cards (SD & CF) themselves are backed up to the PC weekly. The PC is backed up to an external media weekly. I also export the settings from each program that has such a function whenever I make significant changes to those settings and keep those application-level settings backups on one of the removable memory cards.
More Details here

So I will need to change them back to original settings by relinking them before taking iLauncher out in the future, right?
But you might want a means to store encrypted data.
I need a more detailed explaination, please.
I run both Sprite Backup and Spb Backup. I will check these out.
Thanks for the backup reminder.

Correct. Or, perhaps more to the point, whatever you leave them set to be will be what they are set to be until you set them to be something else.

Two different types. You may want one, the other, both, or neither. First type: Encrypted folders/files. Just a way to protect data. Resco Explorer is one such program that can do this. Second type: Specific data encryption. I currently use eWallet (used to use SplashID, have a couple others, too) to keep my passwords, registration keys, etc. Handy and secure. Getting one that syncs with a desktop version is handy, too.
