Thanks for the reply. On re-reading my first post, I'm amazed you were able to make sense of it.
Google Maps, itself, is quite responsive. The slow part is the downloading of all the map images. It takes around 2 seconds to load each of the tiles.
I believe I am using the newest version of google maps, since I just downloaded it. This is the URL ot the jad file that I installed: http://google.com/gmm/apps/v1.2.1/en...d_MIDP2_en.jad
(Sorry, I couldn't find the URL you posted)
Is this also the version you used?
Thanks so much.

2 secs for each of the titles? That's very slow - on my test devices (connected via AS USB Internet pass-through and a very fast, unrestricted - no firewalls and stuff - network), it was far faster, almost instantenous. As AS USB isn't much different, speed-wise, ferom the practical maximum of 802.11b on a handheld, I think the case must be a connection issue, not with that of J9/Google Maps.
The URL's of the latest Google Maps can be found at http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=126167

Well, I've had a go at installing all this tonight - which is a major achievement for me ! All seems to have gone well, except for download speeds in Google Maps, which is very, very slow.
I have an X50v running WM2003se. I installed the QVGA version of MIDP. That all seemed to go very smoothly. I haven't done the registry thing though, and have installed the Golf Tracker and Gmaps .jads using IBM's method suggested in the .pdf file. Both installed fine and launched fine.
Unfortunately for me, the speed at which the maps are loading up is awful. Even slower than the 2 secs a tile of akao. Otherwise the app runs normally. I'm using v1.25.03 of GoogleMaps.
Maybe the problems reported with Opera mini are common across all apps accessing the internet on the X50v/X51v ??
Also, when Gmaps is trying to d/l info on-line (to show the map on-screen), my X50v's power button starts flashing green - which I've never seen before in such circumstances.
I don't have the knowledge to figure out what might be the problem, but thought I'd contribute by reporting my findings at least.
Thank you to Menneisyys for his informative and interesting efforts on this topic.

Dunno if other apps are affected - for example, WLIrc worked OK.
I'll double-test the Gmail Maps issue with my x51v again.

I've just added a new, large section to the article on both the Dell Axim x50v/x51v compliance of the excellent Google Maps and the relocatability reports on J9's files/cache in the main memory.

Did you modify the REG file before importing it so that it points to the new location of yoiur emulator.exe file? Where is your IBM J9 dir located, and what is the contents of your modded reg file? Can you paste it here?

The link is here (incidentally, it's also in the Downloading section of my article).

I found following issues
(1) I had previous J9 installed before I tried with QVGA and VGA (Hi-Res) versions on my X50V. I did not remove it (installed via CAB). I installed all to BIS.
(2) QVGA very slow in SE-VGA (QVGA)and native VGA mode. VGA version doesn't run in native VGA as stated. VGA version too very slow in SE-VGA (QVGA) mode.
(3) My power button flashed while I tried both new (6.1) version at times while using either Opera Mini 2.0 (Advanced) and Google Maps. I coundn't find the reason for power button flash.
(4) Soon once I ran each of new (6.1) versons and then tried to run my older J9 (already insatlled) (MIDLET HQ), all installed JAVA apps vanished and I had to re-install them DESPITE it contained files in 'My Documents\midlets'. In addition I got two additonal directories 'My Documents\My Midlets' and 'My Documents\temp" and I found that whenever I run one version of J9 after another (say old J9 and never 6.1 versions both), each time I have to re-install the JAVA apps.
(5) Finally I decided to use old version (installed via CAB to BIS and never removed while I tried both new 6.1 versions) as it is very speedy comapred to both new versions and yet it gave me very satisfactory surfing experince (speed, vivid and brilliant graphics and text on screen, very fast rendering of almost all pages and almost feel of a full HTML browser). Now for casual browsing I use Opera Mini 2.0 only.
(6) While using Opera Mobile Beta 8.5, Opera Mini 2.0 via any of above JAVA Midlets and NF 3.2 I have noticed that I can not run any of these at once. It doesn't load at all. For example, if Opera Mobile is running, Midlet will not launch as well as NF 3.2. I wish to know why.
(7) I wish to be able to download files etc. in Opera Mini 2.0 as it says it will close whener I select to download. Any solution so that Opera Mini 2.0 allows to download on my Axim X50V WM 2003 SE?
(8) I made my Opera Mobile Beta 8.5 to idenify as IE 6.0 and found it very interesting. YET 'POCKETPCTHOUGHTS.COM' swicthes back to mobile mode only and I cound't get it to run in full IE 6.0 rendering, while Aximsite and many other sites loaded in full IE 6.0 renedering. Again, WHY?
(9) As we found google maps (JAVA) is slow on Axim X50V/51V as well as Mozilla doen't run on Axim X50V - WM 2003 SE due to some hardware / memeory map configurations.

thanks for the great review Menneisyys. Hopefully IBM will get a chance to fix the bugs for the X51V users. And it's unfortunate that WM5 seems to slow things down...

This shouldn't be paid attention to - it's pretty normal on other, non-Axim devices too.

As I'v epointed out in the article, the new version, for some strange reason, uses \My Documents\temp to store the deployed midlets, not \My Documents\midlets. I haven't tested migrating (that is, just copying the contents of the (5.7.2) latter to the (6.1) former) - it may work so that you can avoid having to re-deploy everything. (I've, BTW, discussed migration issues a lot in my prev, 5.7.2/Intent-related article if you plan to do some migration with those versions/midlet managers.)

Does the 5.7.2 + Opera Mini 2.0 combination work on your Axim? That's certainly very good news.

The current (2) beta of Opera Mobile is a resource hog. The same happens on my Pocket PC's too. Later/final versions will hopefully be better in this respect.

How can get the java games on my mobile to play?, some play and some dont.
I installed the j9-midp qvga version and modified the registry so all is good there so do I need the J9 PP version instead?
Next question if I do which file is the main loader? For the J9midp it was the emulater.exe with the PP version I dont have an emulator file just 4 other .exe files.
Thanks so new to all this....

Generic midlets (geneally) run; mobile phone brand/series/model-specific games mostly don't. (See my previous Midlet article.)

Nope, they're completely independent. The PP version isn't needed to run midlets.
