FAQ

alright, I've pm'd this to Ike. But I'll post it here for review and additions :) Its REALLY rough and what not, but its a start!

-Can anyone suggest a CF card for my Axim?

-Can anyone suggest a WAP?

-What is the difference between a router/AP just an AP?

-What is Bluetooth and how is it compared to WiFi?

-How has Windows Mobile affected WiFi, its cards/drivers, etc?

-Are there other browsers other than PIE?

-Will SD WiFi work?

-What are the Intersil Reference Drivers and what are they used for? Why would you use drivers other than the provided ones?

-How can I access my Axim through my PC via wireless?
There is a thread somewhere on AximSite where someone is trying to write a program to do this but, as far as I know, the only current way is to use the Explorer function in ActiveSync.
BTW, accessing the Axim via ActiceSync like I described will allow you to copy and/or move files to and from the Axim but you won't actually be able to 'use' files on the Axim from your PC (that is, double clicking a file you see on the Axim will just show it's properties, so something like an MP3 will not actually play on your PC while it is still on the Axim).

-What signs show me my hardware is bad?

-Can I use SSH?
http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showt...threadid=13107

-What about 802.11a and 802.11g?
http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showt...threadid=11948 (notes on .11g need update)

-Setting it up through a proxy server

-What about external antaennas?

Does anyone know of a manufacturer that is making a Wi-Fi Compact Flash card in the higher speed “G” format? I have seen the slower speed “B” , but no “G”.

No and I wouldn't hold my breath. There's an indication that the CF interface cannot transfer data faster than the 'b' standard so manufacturers may not rush to make g cards available.

Is is possible to brownse my home network using only the programs that come with Pocket PC 2003, or do i have to use another program? Wonderful tutorial btw.

I love this site... let axim user unite... We must storm the Ipaq'ers homes looting their SD memory and CF WIFI. Oh and having our way with their women.

Thanks for the compliment. You should be able to access your home network using the included software although it seems like PPC treats networks differently from other windows OS so it can get frustrating to make the connection. Anyway, I think the way to do is in file explorer, tap on open from the menu bar and type in the path to your shared drive/folder. I believe the format is \\computer-name\folder unfortunately I cannot test it because my shares are already held in memory from my use of PocketLAN (which does things similarly to Rescoe Explorer. I’d already paid for it and didn’t feel like paying for Rescoe to do the same thing even though it’s an easier program to use and has other features.)

Ike,
Just wanted to thank you for your website and insiteful and comprehensive walk-through for WiFi. I got all my components in today, a Siemen's wireless router and a DLink 660w CF wireless card, and by following your information I am enjoying a WiFi connection at home.
Thank you,

Mike

Thanks for the tutorial. Solved my wifi sync problem. Didn't know the default underscore in the Axim name(Pocket_PC) would prevent a connection. Well done!

Wireless Frequently Asked Questions

I've just uploaded a draft version of a Wireless FAQ. Please feel free to refer newbie questions to it but I would also like comments from the experts on the site.

Post here or PM me.

ikehiker, it looks good! Just a few more possible FAQs:

1. What are the advantages/disadvantages of wifi? Here, you could go into the neat things you can do (e.g., file sharing, printer sharing, sharing Internet access, etc.).

2. Is a wifi network secure?

3. Is there any way to increase my wifi range?

4. What are hotspots and how can I access them? (You already touch on this in your Setting Up a Home Wifi Network, but more details would be nice.)

5. What is war driving, war walking etc.?

6. How is wifi different from wireless USB?

7. Can I connect wirelessly to more than one PC?

That's all I can think of now. Hope this helps.

Gigi

Here's another odd thing you might want to consider for your FAQ.

I recently lost my "Work" connections (no idea why). Apparently, you need to do a hard reset to get them back. I reinstalled my wifi card software (Ambicom), got a good connection, was picking up DHCP o.k. with the correct IP and DNS addresses. Set WEP correctly and could ping just fine. But no PIE ("page not found" messages).

Turns out that the "Proxy" settings for "Work" had decided that my network uses a Proxy server (well, my desktop does -- for Cookie Cop -- and somehow this setting got transmitted to my Axim). I unchecked the "This network uses a proxy server" box and everything works fine. But it was sure baffling there for a while.
