It all had to do with ICS and DHCP. It seems like my ISP wasn't assigning IPs to my internal network because of some stupid reason or another. I figure that disabling DHCP and setting my routers IP to a static one was part of the problem too. Remember how I told you when I tried switching it from a 'router' to just a plain 'access point' kinda messed it up? Well, it did again, but I finally got it working. Then, I kept getting some error message when trying to enable ICS on my dial-up connection. After a billion tries it took, but I had to leave for a while. I was frustrated anyway. Got home a few hours later hit my wi-fi button as soon as I walked in the door just to test my routers range.....and BINGO! surfin the net. Funny that? If all it needed was a simple restart, I'm going to cry. Right after I throw it out the freaking window of course.

I just got my new Axim X51, new PC and new internet provider and I am having trouble to set up my home Wi-Fi connection.
Actually I follow up your instructions from your guide with no success.
I have a Belkin ADSL Modem/Router. I have removed all the security issues from the setup buy when I turn on the Wi-Fi on my Axim, it does not find the network. In the Site tab on the WLAN utility shows a Hidden Network and no Signal. A few days ago I could connect and surf the net for a while but when I tryied back I could not connect again.
Actually in work it does detect the networks available.
I will apprecciate any support you can provide.

Make sure your router is broadcasting the SSID and make sure it is operating in mixed B+G or B-only. If the router has enhanced/extended G features (advertised as working at 108Mbps), disable this feature. In addition to disabling encryption security (such as WEP and WPA), also make sure MAC filtering is off.

Of course, also make sure the PPC WiFi is turned on (I know this sounds silly but I've had this be the problem with a couple of people)

If you have trouble figuring any of this out, post the model number for your equipment and I'll check the manual.

I already tried with the options you mention and can connect for a few minutes then I lost communication. Today I could not connect at all. Today I tried using Odyssey with the steps on http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=113239 and detected the network for about 30 secs then lost it.
My equipment is modem/router Belkin F5D7631-4.

Have you disabled Powersave in the WLAN? Another possibility with a lost connection is some interference - another wireless network, cordless phone, or microwave oven are common causes. Changing the channel on the router will sometime fix this problem.

WM5 advise/support appears to be lacking:

1. The built in WPA support in WM5 seems to be broken (Linksys/Dlink/Netgear) connection problems.

2. If #1 appears to be true for your network, the Odysey client Dell includes with the x51 will in most cases help.

3. Don't expect your built in WiFi to have the same range as an external card, because of antenna placement the range is limited.

4. If your using the Odysey client, the built in WM5 support is dissabled and vis/versa.

5. The Builtin Wifi appears to work better with BLUETOOTH turned off (and your battery will last longer if Bluetooth is not needed).

6. The best way to turn on/off your builtin Wifi radio is via the top button on the left side of the Axim, or via the top "radio antenna icon" on the display and selecting "airport mode on/off".

7. VXUTILS and POCKETHOSTS (both freeware) are a must have for debugging and using "windows networking" shares on a WM5 PPC.

8. The built in Wifi Radio in the x51 is manufacturered by Maxim. As such, many of the 'prism' baised freeware Wifi programs won't work on your Axim.

9. As of this writing, the x51(v) is not listed in the Wi-Fi.org WiFi compability chart, which may be at the root of any Wifi connection/compatability problems your having.

10. With WM5 Wifi syncing was dropped by Microsoft. However, you may have some luck with "Sync4J" (freeware open source) if contacts/calender syncing is all your after.

Wow, thx for the great info on this troubling issue. It is ashame to think that the Axim being a great device is crippled at it's most interesting abilities (WiFi & BT).

I'm going to be trying out more fixes, and running more tests this weekend. I will post back if I come up with anything new.

Here is a question....

I can see many wfi connection available at the train station. My axim x51v automaticcally connected to the Grant Thorton Accountign network. Not being a member or visiting user to Grant Thorton I do not have a user login and password.

How do I cancel the connection and choose another available connection?


I have tried double clicking on the other available connection and nothing happens.

I've done this, but cannot remember exactly what I did.
Perhaps double click or click and hold on the desired connection.
Maybe, click and hold on unwanted connetion and select something like Release from the menu.

Let us know when you get this figured out.

With WiFi on, in the network settings - Start, Settings, Connections (tab), Network Cards, hold the stylus on the name of the network and select Remove Settings. You may need to be out of range of the network for this to work and the next time you are near it, it will show as a new network so just don't select it again.
