Exclamation Wireless How-to for the Axim

I merged the threads for the Setting Up a Home WiFi Network how-to and the Wireless Frequently Asked Questions just to keep the number of pinned threads to a minimum.

I appreciate continued feed back, especially on errors but also anything concerning style or content.

You can PM comments to me or send me email to the link at the end of the tutorial.

TIA!

Thanks, Jack!

I've added some details to the security section. First, I added a link to Practically Networked's site which has a good set of instructions on adding the security, but then I also added a few definitions (since these are not on the PN website) and a few specific details that I've found important for settings on the Axim.

Also, please note that the webpage is now an html (formerly it was named htm by M$ Word). I've updated the link in my first post but anyone that bookmarjed it prior to about 10 minutes ago, your link will need to be updated.

Sure, I'm fairly sure there's nothing outright wrong on it (after all, it's based on things people have said here ;) ). It will eventually be on the Tutorials here and I'll change the link above when that happens (I'll probably give people the next week to submit any more remarks) but I'll probably mirror it on my site, too.

Thanks again for the comments.

Looks great to me.. a few SSID, DHCP, MOUSE terms I'm going to have to go look up and find out where to get Resco products, but nothing insurmountable. Really liked the pictures, makes it almost pilot proof . Just got a wireless system for the desktop/laptop combo... now I'm going to try to add the ax to it and see how it works...

could be a great moment in computer sports!

I've just added links to Webopedia for some of the terms.

ikehiker great job looks good you covered almost all aspects.
Do you think it would be worth while adding a printing section? since outside of IR you can print via Wifi.

enob,
Good idea. I actually have not restored that function since I did the A03 upgrade, so I'll see if I can get it working again and record the steps as I do it.

I just ordered a WiFi card for my Axim and wanted to do some advance digging to see if I could get it all figured out ahead of time.:rolling:
Ike, you've done a fantastic job and that one article has set my mind at ease that I'm now excited about the opertunity to start WiFi-ing, uppose to being nervous about setting it all up.
Thank you.

Mike

Mike,

When you undertake the project, please post back or PM me if there is anything that's unclear. I consider this still a work in progress.

Thanks, Ike. I was a little intimidated to say the least by the seemingly daunting task of establishing a network. However, your tutorial more than simplified the job!

One of the great benefits is the ability to access my various files/programs from a centralized location. This has virtually eliminated any lingering concerns regarding storage limitations on my Ax. Kudos to you!

Fantastic job! Keep up the good work. It's the ability to access shared ideas and information that makes a site strong, and I continue to be pleased with the product I purchased as well as the support that I've received in the various forums.

Thanks again.

Hehe, thanks for the props Ike. :D
I haven't been able to be around much the past week, but I'll be sure to read through things formally and give you some thoughts this weekend.

But so far so good! Great for someone needing help with getting things up and going.

A few things I would suggest at this time:

-In the 'WiFi with Dial-up WinXP'* section, perhaps more of a description of what this is (Ad-Hoc) and what is required to set it up. I dont suspect that many 'newbies' would be using ICS to begin with and may not even know it exists. So starting a bit further back with a quick description of what Ad-Hoc is would help give those who need this option a better understanding. Also, included would be a note on the hardware required.
*Hate to dissect snathanb's tutorial, but it seems a bit advanced and not on that 'tutorial' level :)

-A FAQ section could be useful. Typical pre-WiFi questions and concerns as well as post-WiFi questions and problems.
I'll work on sorting through a lot of the aximsite threads and coming up with something.

-This next one's not so much for the tutorial, but a note on something that would be beneficial to many and something I've been meaning to do. A tutorial-level description of WiFi, its modes, its standards, its uses, and its future.

Oh, and PCMAG did an WAP lab test recently. Here is a link to the article online. Unfortunately, I don't see their bar-chart comparisons on here, I could be missing them though.

Hi Shokpin,

Thanks for the comments. I think the FAQ would be a great addition and if you could do the leg-work on it, that would be even greater.

I also appreciate the link to the AP tests. I'm going to add a link to it from the equipment list as soon as soon as I finish this post.

As for the ad-hoc instructions, I have little personal experience in setting up in ad-hoc mode so I wasn't prepared to start modifying snathanb's post. I figured I'd put it up verbatim for now so if someone was looking for something, it would at least be a start for them. Modifying it is on my list of things-to-do.

Thanks again,

Ike,
I should have said on my XP logon thread that I wouldn't have got anywhere near as far as I did without your excellent tutorial. Thanks again.
